Job summary

Sargent Corporation, a recognized heavy civil contractor in Ashland, Virginia, is seeking an Estimator to join our preconstruction team. In this role, you'll work closely with our Lead Estimator to drive project success from takeoff through handoff to Operations.

Estimator — Heavy Civil

We’re hiring an Estimator to join our preconstruction team. Working closely with the Lead Estimator, you’ll drive project success from the first takeoff through award and handoff to Operations and remain a trusted resource throughout the project lifecycle.

Compensation and benefits

Base salary: $80,000 - $105,000 depending on experience

What you’ll do

• Develop accurate, competitive estimates including labor, materials, equipment, and timelines using HCSS HeavyBid
• Review and interpret project plans, specifications, and geotechnical reports to identify scope, risks, and opportunities
• Perform precise quantity takeoffs and identify all required work activities
• Source and engage subcontractors and material suppliers
• Track, evaluate, and pursue new project opportunities
• Lead the handoff of awarded projects from Estimating to Operations
• Support the Operations team with change order clarification and pricing
• Contribute ideas to improve project outcomes and competitiveness

What we’re looking for

• 3–5 years of heavy civil earthwork estimating experience
• Bachelor’s in engineering or construction management or equivalent experience
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail
• Clear written and verbal communication; ability to manage multiple priorities
• Solid understanding of construction methods, means, and sequencing
• Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with clients, engineers, and vendors
• Valid driver’s license
