Role And Responsibilities

  • As an Associate Attorney in our Criminal Defense division, you will carry real responsibility on felony and misdemeanor cases, with the backing and mentorship of our partners and senior trial attorneys. Here's what that looks like:
  • In the Courtroom
  • Represent clients in felony and misdemeanor cases from arraignment through plea negotiations, trial, and sentencing
  • Try cases from voir dire to verdict: opening statements, direct and cross-examination, and closing arguments
  • Argue pretrial motions, including motions to suppress, and handle evidentiary hearings
  • Appear at hearings, settings, docket calls, and other proceedings as assigned
  • Represent clients at Administrative License Revocation (ALR) hearings in DWI cases
  • Negotiate with prosecutors from a position of strength, earned through preparation
What You Bring
  • Licensed and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas
  • 2-5 years of legal experience with a background in criminal defense or criminal law (defense and prosecution experience both count)
  • Felony experience (required): you've handled felony cases and understand what's at stake when a client's freedom is on the line
  • Trial experience (required): you've tried cases to verdict and you know your way around a courtroom
  • Strong research, writing, and motion practice skills
  • Confident courtroom presence, persuasive oral advocacy, and sharp negotiation skills
  • The organization and judgment to manage a demanding caseload, deadlines, and court settings without letting anything slip
  • Dependable, with a great attitude and a strong work ethic
  • 100% commitment to our Core Values (see below)
Bonus Points
  • DWI and intoxication-offense experience, including ALR hearings, field sobriety tests, and breath and blood evidence
  • Familiarity with the courts and local practice in Comal, Guadalupe, and surrounding counties
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • A tech-forward mindset: you're excited to use (and help build) better tools and systems
Case Strategy And Preparation
  • Review and analyze discovery from a strategic defense perspective (offense reports, body-cam and dash-cam video, lab results, witness statements) to identify themes, strengths, weaknesses, and defenses
  • Build a clear theory of the case and a plan of attack for every matter you handle
  • Research and draft motions, briefs, and other pleadings
  • Prepare for trial through our team-based trial preparation process, and pressure-test your strategy in firm trial practice meetings
  • Collaborate with investigators, paralegals, law clerks, and other team members to build case strategy and deliverables
Client Advocacy
  • Interview clients and witnesses
  • Counsel clients with candor and clarity so they can make informed decisions at every stage of their case
  • Keep clients informed through prompt, consistent communication and diligent case management that meets firm standards
  • Deliver a first-class client experience from the first meeting to final resolution.
