Job Title: ESL Teacher - Secondary (In Anticipation of Future Openings)

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The ESL Teacher will assist with closing the English Learner (EL) student achievement gap and accelerate learning for EL students by building content teacher capacity through job-embedded professional learning and implementation of effective language-rich instructional practices. Under the direction of the ESL Coordinator and in conjunction with the campus administrative staff, the ESL teacher supports and provides job embedded training and capacity building in order to improve classroom linguistic instruction that leads to improved English Learner student achievement. An ESL Teacher is one who supports others in building their teaching skills, assists in application of new knowledge, and provides ongoing learning and sustainment. The ESL Teacher increases the overall quality of effective classroom instruction.

Valid Texas Secondary Teacher Certification in English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR)
ESL Certification/Endorsement
Special Knowledge/Skills:

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Serve as the lead language learner through modeling and facilitating ESL learning opportunities for campus staff.
  2. Serve as the teacher of record for ESL classes.
  3. Support the implementation of state standards including the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) through district adopted curricula and use of effective sheltered instructional strategies.
  4. Increase the quality and effectiveness of language-rich classroom instruction through collaborating, co-planning, co-teaching cycle completion, fostering trusting relationships with staff and supporting the learning process.
  5. Build sheltered instructional capacity with campus teams through a gradual release model including facilitating conversations during team or teacher collaborations to assist with determining language-rich instructional decisions.
  6. Support and communicate campus and District initiatives.
  7. Foster a shared responsibility between campuses and the District to know every student by name and need.
  8. Assist District and campus administration in identifying ESL programmatic growth areas for the campus and grade-level/department teams.
  9. Meet regularly with campus administrators to monitor EL students’ progress and develop responsive plans to address student needs.
  10. Partner and plan professional learning with campus instructional coaches and department heads to improve outcomes for EL students.
  11. Assist teachers in interpreting test data and learning to use it to adjust instruction linguistically.
  12. Exhibit a high level of ethics and confidentiality in regard to student and teacher records and classroom performance.
  13. Collaboratively develop lessons to implement a co-teach model that fulfills the requirements of the District's ESL program.
  14. Use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the proficiency levels and needs of EL students.
  15. Develop and implement effective lessons for ESL classes.
  16. Conduct assessment of student proficiency levels and use the results to plan instructional activities and linguistic accommodations.
  17. Coordinate the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) testing for assigned campus.
  18. Attend and participate in faculty meetings, ESL department meetings, ILA department meetings, and serve on staff committees as required.
