Position: English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher - Elementary

Location: Naquag Elementary School/Glenwood Elementary School

Pay: WREA Salary Schedule

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in ESL, Applied Linguistics, Education, or related field (Master’s in TESOL or ESL preferred).
  • Certification: Must hold a valid Massachusetts Teaching License in English as a Second Language (ESL/ELL). SEI Endorsement required.
  • Experience: Previous experience teaching Multilingual Learners (MLs) in a K–12 setting preferred.
  • Skills: Proficiency in English Language Development (ELD) standards and WIDA frameworks. Strong communication and collaboration skills with students, families, and colleagues. Ability to design and deliver language-focused, standards-based instruction and differentiate for diverse English proficiency levels, including students with interrupted formal education (SIFE) and MLs with disabilities. Skilled in using language assessment data to inform instruction, monitor progress, and support linguistic, social, and emotional growth within an MTSS framework.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Instruction: Plan, organize, and deliver high-quality, Massachusetts standards-aligned English Language Development (ELD) lessons using district-approved curricula and culturally and linguistically sustaining practices. Develop and implement clear content and language objectives based on WIDA ELD standards to foster language acquisition across reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
  • Student Support: Actively participate in the MTSS framework by tracking language proficiency progress, identifying academic or linguistic challenges, and delivering targeted language interventions.
  • Assessment: Administer language proficiency assessments (including ACCESS for ELLs and WIDA screeners) alongside classroom formative and summative assessments. Monitor linguistic progress and provide timely feedback to students and families.
  • Classroom Management: Establish a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment that values multilingualism, fosters student engagement, and promotes academic success.
  • Collaboration: Partner with general education content teachers to co-plan, co-teach, and scaffold content to ensure MLs have equitable access to core curriculum. Participate in PLCs, faculty meetings, and professional development focused on multilingual education.
  • Parent and Community Engagement: Communicate effectively with families, utilizing translation and interpretation services to ensure equitable access to information regardless of home language. Participate in parent-teacher conferences and school events.
  • Professional Learning: Pursue professional development on second language acquisition, language pedagogy, and emerging educational technologies aligned with state and district initiatives.

PHYSICAL & ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical: Ability to work in a classroom setting, move throughout the school building, and lift up to 25 lbs of instructional materials.

Additional: Successful completion of background checks required by Massachusetts state law and School Committee policies.
