Job summary

Bechtel Corporation seeks an ES&H professional to provide technical oversight of the Thacker Pass project’s ES&H compliance activities. You will inspect field execution, assist with safety requirements, and coordinate with engineering, construction, procurement and project controls to ensure safe, compliant operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in environmental, safety, health or science-related discipline.
  • 5–8 years of relevant experience or 9–12 years of relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of OSHA 1926 and 1910 and Bechtel's ESH Core Processes.
  • Experience conducting ES&H assessments/inspections during construction.
  • Experience managing ES&H subcontractors or consultants.

Responsibilities

  • Provide ES&H oversight of project field execution activities to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining ES&H programs, systems and procedures for safety of personnel and environmental protection.
  • Maintain ES&H databases including incident events and corrective actions.
  • Perform statistical analysis of ES&H data to identify trends and drive improvements.
  • Lead risk assessments, mitigation planning, and monitoring of ES&H issues.
  • Prepare communications, reports and records for program execution and retention.
  • Support incident notifications, investigations and reporting.

Job description

  • Salary Range: $91.000 - $138.8000 annually (Determined by function, education, experience, and qualifications of the applicant.)
Project Overview

Thacker Pass is the largest known lithium resource in the United States. Once complete, the mine and processing facilities will produce more lithium carbonate than any other facility in the United States by far – enough to power 1 million electric vehicles per year. As the EPCM contractor for Lithium Americas, Bechtel is responsible for managing and integrating the efforts of a team contractors engineering and building the facility. We are also managing procurement of about $1 Billion in goods and services. Earth work began in 2023 and design and procurement of long-lead equipment is underway. The project is located in the high desert and wide-open spaces of north-central Nevada about 25 miles from the Oregon border, 1 hour northwest of Winnemucca, Nevada and 3 hours northeast of Reno. Planned with sustainability and the environment in mind, the facility will use its excess process heat to generate electricity and will recycle process water up to seven times. Once the second phase of the project is complete, Thacker Pass will produce more than 16 times the current U.S. output of lithium. Job Summary

In this role, you will provide technical oversight of the project’s ES&H compliance activities through inspection of project field execution activities. You will assist project and construction management in implementing and complying with project safety requirements and in addressing ES&H issues as they arise during project execution. You will work directly with other project-level functions (e.g., engineering, construction, subcontracts, procurement, project controls, document controls) to assist them in addressing the applicable ES&H requirements in their work activities and conduct daily site surveillance to verify adequate use of PPE, routine equipment inspections, project ES&H initiatives.

Major Responsibilities
  • Provides assistance in a wide variety of Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) disciplines to facilitate implementation of Bechtel's ES&H program and ES&H Management System to include aiding compliance with Bechtel's ES&H standards, applicable regulatory requirements, and contractual commitments.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of programs, systems, and procedures necessary for the safety and health of employees and protection of the environment and communities.
  • Maintains ES&H databases, inclusive of incident events, audit/assessment findings, and corrective actions.
  • Performs statistical analysis of ES&H data to help identify performance trends and contributing factors as part of continuous improvement.
  • Identifies and supports any unique software systems and electronic innovation used by ES&H personnel.
  • Leads teams in conducting risk assessment, studies, mitigation planning, and monitoring in response to ES&H issues.
  • Prepares communications, writes reports, and prepares documents for program execution and records retention.
  • Assists with incident notifications, leads investigations, and prepares incident investigation reports.
  • Recommends and implements improvements in processes, procedures, and work activities to minimize hazard potential.
  • Participates in and may lead employee training, emergency preparedness, and quality assurance programs.
  • Researches moderately complex issues and provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice.
  • Provides support to ES&H field and office personnel, inclusive of all ES&H disciplines.
Education And Experience Requirements

Requires a bachelor’s or master's degree (or international equivalent) related to environmental, safety, health or science-related discipline and 5-8 years of relevant experience or 9-12 years of relevant work experience.

Required Knowledge And Skills
  • Knowledge of OSHA 1926 and 1910 required
  • Understanding of Bechtel's ESH Core Processes
  • Can perform root cause analysis as needed for incident investigations
  • Conducts Project Contractor Orientation
  • Leads and implements Project ESH Audits, monitoring completion of specified corrective actions
  • Coaches Contractor Project and Safety Team on the Bechtel Processes and expectations
  • Knowledge of safety programs/engineering systems, principles, and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of national safety laws/regulations and regulatory agencies’ regulatory requirements and responsibilities, industry standards/current practices for ES&H, and best management practices for minimizing potential ES&H risks during project execution.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials and physical risks and the mechanisms to mitigate them.
  • Experience in ES&H assessments/inspection during construction..
  • Experience in managing and/or providing technical oversight of ES&H subcontractors or consultants.
