Job description

We are seeking an experienced, talented and enthusiastic Excess Casualty Claims Handler to work within significant limits and authority on highly complex claim assignments requiring specialized knowledge of commercial lines, litigation, and related processes. The role evaluates coverage, investigates, analyzes, negotiates, and settles complex claims with high exposure typically requiring outside investigation while delivering quality customer service.



  • Directly handle, manage and/or oversee complex commercial claims.

  • Handle claims following Claim Handling Best Practices in all phases of the claim including through initial contact, investigation of the claim, evaluation of the claim for coverage and reserving for exposure, and in the resolution and documentation of claims.

  • Work with other carrier claim professionals within the coverage tower to ensure proper evaluation and resolution.

  • Provide top-notch customer service through all interactions and communications with internal and external customers and business partners.

  • Resolve coverage-related matters working collaboratively with senior management and outside counsel when necessary.

  • Complete written reports and present claims to management, underwriting, actuary, and reinsurers as needed.

  • Adhere to all statutory regulations and Unfair Claims Practices Acts.

  • Consistently communicate claim developments, exposure analyses and requests for authority to management.

  • Participate in mediations, settlement conferences and otherwise manage claims through to resolution.

  • Work closely with underwriting and other business partners to review, analyze, and communicate claim trends and help develop policy language.

  • Along with underwriting, attend current and prospective meetings with insureds and brokers.

  • Work with and manage outside vendors, including outside attorneys, manage budgets and actively oversee litigation.

  • Assist in developing and mentoring junior staff.

  • Speak at industry events as needed.



  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of excess casualty claims experience.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the handling and management of litigated claims

  • Proven ability to collect and analyze information, identify trends, establish facts, and recommend solutions.

  • Significant experience negotiating claims and handling conflict.

  • Experience using a claims management system and diary management system to accurately document file activities.

  • Holds and maintains appropriate adjuster licensing, will obtain additional licensing or certification based upon business needs, and be diligent in securing CE/CLE credits to maintain such licenses.

  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail along with organizational skills.

  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to convey advanced concepts to a varied audience.

  • Experienced in multi-tasking, prioritizing work, and working effectively in a team environment while maintaining attention to detail.

  • Demonstrate experience and advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Products.

  • Bachelor's degree required.
