Summary:

Receives arriving patients and their families. Operates on-line computer keyboard and accompanying CRT display. Selects computer programs to accept patient demographic and financial information and changes. Establishes patient chart for medical staff to treat patient. Using sound judgement ascertains patient's immediate medical needs and directs patient and family appropriately.

Job Responsibilities:

1)Greets patients and their families presenting for services.

2)Refers potentially serious medical conditions for immediate attention (such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, heart complaints, lacerations and bleeding).

3)Inputs patient information and changes into Hospital Computer System via CRT and keyboard ensuring that all information is accurate and processed within specific time periods. Provides patient presenting for tests with completed Encounter Form and directs patient to appropriate area for test.

4)Updates and ensures the accuracy of all demographic, financial and charge information listed on chart and in Patient Registration System.

5)Calmly handles inquiries and concerns of patients, relatives and neighbors of patients, ambulance personnel, helicopter personnel and police who may accompany patient to the Emergency Room.

6)Schedules outpatient surgical procedures, issues Encounter Forms, and gathers necessary patient information including chief complaint, nature of injury or illness, emergency notification numbers, demographic and insurance information.

7)Communicates with patients to explain waiting periods and soothes concerned family members. Brings dressings, ice packs and wheelchairs to accommodate patient needs.

8)Calls for approval to treat and completes Referral Forms necessary to process HMO/IPA/PPO, Medicaid and other payor covered patients.

9)Ensures completion of all necessary forms and logs for financial and reporting purposes.

10)Ensures ER chart is completed timely with all charge information, separated and distributed according to Departmental Policy and the needs oth other areas once patient visit is completed.

11)Courteously answers the phones and refers calls to the appropriate medical personnel. May be requested to make calls to different agencies based on ER medical staff needs.

12)May be required to ascertain prior records from Records Room.

13)May be lead worker and be classified as Head ER Receptionist with additional duties of training, scheduling and ER Manual Maintenance.

14)Maintains established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.

15)Assists in care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies. Alerts supervisor to a malfunction of equipment.

16)Maintains required records, reports and files.

17)Attends inservice and other required meetings.

18)Enhances professional growth and development through inservice meetings, educational programs, etc.

19)Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Required Work Experience:

1)6 months CRT/Clerical training or experience

Preferred Work Experience:

1)1 year hospital business and or receptionist

Skills and Competencies:

1)Calculator proficiency/dexterity

2) 60 WPM typing and formatting skills

3) Basic familiarity with office equipment usage

4) Articulate speech, hearing acuity and interpersonal skills in person and by phone
