Job summary

Avenue Healthcare Group is seeking a Laboratory Manager to ensure the provision of high-quality laboratory diagnostic services. This role involves planning, organizing, and coordinating laboratory activities while leading a professional team to adhere to safety protocols and compliance standards. Candidates should possess a degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences along with at least 5 years of relevant experience, strong interpersonal skills, and a valid practicing license.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years’ experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Valid practicing license from Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board.
  • Experience with accreditation standards is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise laboratory team to meet targets, ensuring high standards.
  • Manage laboratory costs and ensure accurate billing.

Reports To: Clinical Operations Manager

Job Objective/Purpose: Planning, organizing, and coordinating all activities in the Laboratory unit to ensure the provision of high-quality laboratory diagnostic services in line with hospital protocols and standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. People Management:
  • Supervise laboratory team to meet individual and team targets, ensuring professional and high standards of service.
  • Prepare monthly work schedules (ROTA) and ensure efficient use of overtime and locums.
  • Provide leadership, staff development, engagement, and performance management, including conducting monthly staff meetings with documented evidence.
  • Financial Management:
    • Manage laboratory costs within budget, ensuring proper staffing, accurate billing, incident management, and consumable management.
    • Ensure quality care and stakeholder relationships, follow up on feedback, and demonstrate growth.
  • Stock Management:
    • Conduct monthly stock takes, timely ordering and receiving of stock, and proper storage to prevent stock outs.
  • Equipment and Supplies Management:
    • Maintain inventory, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory equipment for efficiency and accuracy.
  • Laboratory Services:
    • Ensure proper documentation, maintenance of records, confidentiality, and integrity of test results.
    • Maintain a safe working environment, adhere to safety protocols, IPC standards, waste disposal, SOPs, and quality indicators.
    • Escalate quality issues and stock outs to the Group Lab Manager and MSM/HM.
  • Compliance:
    • Follow laboratory profession rules and adhere to government and professional standards of care.
    • Ensure compliance with Avenue Healthcare policies and procedures, including corporate governance and fraud prevention.

    Person Specification

    • Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences with 5+ years’ experience.
    • Valid practicing license from Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board.
    • Experience with accreditation standards such as SANAS, CAP, ISO, and Laboratory QMS is highly desirable.
    • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills.
    • Highly responsive, ethical, and responsible.
