Veterinary Surgical Center of Long Island (“VSCLI”) is seeking an Emergency Veterinarian to join our Team.

VSCLI is a Specialty Referral Practice and a 24-Hour Emergency Care Hospital in Huntington, NY. Our brand-new 10,000 square-foot state-of-the-art hospital opened its doors in May 2024. VSCLI’s specialty services include: Emergency, Diagnostics, and Surgery. VSCLI is seeking an Emergency Veterinarian to join our Team, and assist us in rapidly growing our specialty referral practice and 24-hour emergency hospital.

VSCLI is looking for a highly skilled Emergency Veterinarian who is dedicated to delivering the highest quality of emergency medicine and critical care. We are seeking an Emergency Veterinarian who specializes in triage and treating life-threatening injuries and illnesses. We are seeking an ER veterinarian who can cover fourteen @ 12-hour shifts per month. Your schedule will be alternating work weeks of three (3) shifts per week and four (4) shifts per week, totaling 14 shifts per month. Our team of four (4) ER Veterinarians have a rotational schedule that you will rotate through each month, leading 12-hour shifts that are either 8am to 8pm or 8pm to 8am. The shifts stay in place for one month and you will know all of your workdays up to 6 months in advance. Your shifts will be 2/3 day shifts and 1/3 night shifts in total for the year.

For Emergency Veterinarians with surgical interests, your tenure at VSCLI will enable you to scrub in and receive surgical training by VSCLI's specialty surgeons. Once you have the required proficiency, you will be able to bring emergency cases requiring surgery into the OR.

We are seeking an Emergency Veterinarian to provide emergency and critical care to our patients and someone who thrives in a fast-paced emergency clinic and can remain calm under pressure. This individual must also be able to adapt quickly to our patients’ changing conditions, be a quick thinker and be able to treat emergent cases quickly. You must be able to work in consultation with our other ER doctors and Surgical Specialists. Experience treating the following conditions is required:

  • Wound Care
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Trauma (such as falling from high places, being struck by a car or external object, etc.)
  • Seizures
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis
  • Respiratory Distress
  • Pain and discomfort
  • Post-operative complications
  • Disorientation
  • Trouble breathing
  • Blood in their urine or stool
  • Constipation

Key responsibilities include:

  • Performing emergency surgeries and procedures as needed.
  • Effectively communicating with pet owners, providing compassionate care to both pets and their families.
  • Collaborating with the veterinary team to develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
  • Maintaining accurate medical records (PMS is Instinct) and staying informed about the latest advances in emergency medicine.

Proficiency with Ultrasound, Digital Radiology, CT Scanner, MRI, In-House Laboratory is preferred, as well as being well-versed in pathology, pharmacology, and animal anatomy.

This candidate must be professional, compassionate, dedicated, enthusiastic, conscientious, positive, and communicates well with colleagues, staff, and clients. This Emergency Veterinarian should be able to remain calm under pressure and always be compassionate and empathetic toward the patient and their family members. Our emergency services will be offered 24 hours, 7 days a week including holidays beginning this September 2025. The ideal candidate will have the opportunity to join a collaborative and dedicated group that receives cases from a loyal referral community that desires the best care for the patient.
