Job summary

OHSU in Portland, Oregon is seeking a Medical Social Worker in the Emergency Department with a focus on mental health crises and safe discharge planning for patients and families.

You will perform psychosocial assessments, provide crisis intervention and brief counseling, coordinate care and resources, advocate for patients, and support surrogates, with attention to POLST, guardianship, and ethics considerations.

Qualifications

• MSW required.
• CSWA or LCSW licensure required for clinical practice.
• Healthcare experience preferred.
• Bilingual language skills strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Conduct psychosocial evaluations of patients, families, and significant others.
• Provide crisis intervention and short-term counseling as needed.
• Support care coordination and planning, including level-of-care decisions.
• Advise on discharge planning, safety planning, and follow-up resources.
• Assist with ethics consultations, guardianship, and surrogate decision-making.
• Address family needs and provide advocacy for patients and loved ones.
