Job description
The selected candidate will provide technical support as a Research Technologist (Research Technologist 2/3). Responsibilities include maintaining, optimizing, and improving manufacturing and production equipment to ensure maximum uptime, safety, and performance; supporting production goals, introducing new technologies, and driving continuous improvement initiatives; interacting with multiple organizations to ensure implementation and compliance with facility, institutional, state, and federal requirements; and supporting cross‑disciplinary teams to coordinate programmatic maintenance and corrective maintenance activities.
This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift or weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift and weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Collaborate with a team of engineers and technologists to repair, maintain, and enhance electro‑mechanical equipment, including welding, pressure, and robotics systems. Support and execute preventive and predictive maintenance programs, troubleshoot and resolve equipment malfunctions promptly, coordinate programmatic maintenance and conduct corrective maintenance on down equipment, plan, procure, and implement new equipment, document work authorizations, and meet safety, security, compliance, and scheduling standards.
In addition to the Research Technologist 2 tasks, take a larger leadership role that includes leading corrective maintenance, writing documents, mentoring staff, driving continuous improvement of preventive and predictive maintenance programs, coordinating programmatic maintenance plans, leading planning, procurement, and implementation of new equipment, and independently communicating equipment upgrade status to management and peers. Lead development and refinement of work authorizing documents and support safe, compliant, and well‑documented operations.

- Demonstrated compliance with safety and operational standards, including Lockout/Tagout.
- Participation in designing, planning, and executing maintenance plans.
- Experience maintaining electromechanical and/or pressure systems.
- Ability to contribute independently in high‑intensity environments and communicate with coworkers representing a variety of technical backgrounds and other organizations.
- Ability to express detailed ideas clearly in ways that build understanding, respect, and trust, as demonstrated through presentations and publications.
- Experience with continuous improvement concepts and tools.
- Enhanced technical and professional expertise of a junior staff through active mentoring and training.

- Contributed ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities; leads development of technical section of small to moderate proposals.
- Influence organizational, project, and program strategies and directions; leads technical decision‑making at task level within a project; makes decisions or recommendations that influence key programmatic objectives.
Lower level: Requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Higher level: Requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate coursework may be desirable.
DOE 426.2A requires a High School Diploma.
- Experience working in a glovebox or cleanroom environment.
- Experience with Electrical, Welding, Pressure, and Laser Safety programs.
- Knowledge and experience implementing Laboratory or similar industry policies affecting research and development activities, equipment maintenance, projects, and/or initiatives.
- Experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing and quality requirements.
- Experience working in a nuclear facility.
- Experience with welding equipment including Laser, Electron Beam, GTA, or GMA.
- Knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis.
- Experience applying continuous improvement concepts and tools.
- Experience performing engineering work using rigorous institutional processes.
- Active Q clearance and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP).
General Physical Mobility: standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending. Specific Physical Mobility: use of both hands, both arms, both legs, both feet, carry/lift up to 20 pounds.
May require 24/7 coverage with potential shift or weekend work. Shift differential pay may be applicable. Assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. The position commitment is 1 year.

- Clearance: Q – Position will be cleared to Q level. Selection requires a U.S. citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Additional access authorization may be required and is a Federal Government decision.
- HRP – Required by DOE Human Reliability Program; includes ongoing drug and alcohol testing and periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
- 426.2A – Position subject to DOE Order 426.2A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities.
- New‑Employment Drug Test – Required for successful applicants; substance abuse policy includes random testing. Positive marijuana test results in termination.
- Regular Position – Term status; Laboratory employees applying for regular‑status positions are converted to regular status.
