Job summary

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) seeks an entry-level Equipment Technician for Barrett Station General Services in Ballwin, MO. You will maintain and repair light vehicles and heavy construction equipment under moderate supervision.

Responsibilities include inspecting, servicing, overhauling transmissions and engines, repairing hydraulic systems, and ensuring OSHA safety standards. A work simulation and medical-physical exam are required.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or completion of a technical training program with repair experience.
• Two years of automotive or heavy equipment repair experience.
• Pass the CDL written exam and obtain Class B CDL with tanker endorsement and interstate status within 60 days.
• Valid vehicle inspection license within 60 days of hire.
• Complete a work simulation and medical-physical examination.

• Inspects and overhauls automotive components like alternators, starters, distributors.
• Completes mandated fleet inspections and ensures OSHA compliance.

What You’ll Do

• Maintains and performs basic repairs to automobiles, trucks, tractors, loaders, motor graders, and other heavy equipment.
• Inspects, services, repairs, and overhauls transmissions, engines, clutches, drivelines, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies and ignition systems; repairs and installs hydraulic controls; tunes motors using standard testing equipment; dismantles, repairs, and reassembles air compressors, hydraulic jacks, pumps, cylinders, and related equipment.
• Inspects, repairs, overhauls, and assembles automotive components such as alternators, distributors, and starters.
• Completes mandated fleet inspections and ensures all equipment meets OSHA standards and all repairs and modifications are done in accordance with operational specifications and safety standards.
• May weld and modify equipment and fabricate parts.

Minimum Qualifications

All you need for success:

• Associate’s Degree in Diesel Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, Automotive Technology, OR
• Completion of a formal post-secondary technical training program in automobile or heavy equipment-related repair (of at least 30 credit hours or one school year in duration) AND one year of experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair, OR
• Two years of experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair.
• A passing grade on the written portion of the commercial driver’s license (CDL) exam is required prior to the hire date. Must pass the driving portion of the Class B CDL exam with tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, and interstate status (either Excepted Interstate [EI] or Non-Excepted Interstate [NI]) within 60 days of hire into the position.
• Valid vehicle inspection license within 60 days of hire into the position.
• Successful completion of a work simulation examination and medical-physical examination.

• Job requires significant physical stamina and endurance.
• Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
• Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
