The starting range for this position is $55,218 to $64,960, depending on qualifications. The full range is $55,218 to $87,817.

Job Overview

The Water Department is responsible for providing a safe and reliable water supply for the citizens of Normal, maintaining proper pressure and volume for fire protection. The department has three main divisions: Administration/Billing, Distribution, and Treatment.

The department seeks passionate candidates for the Treatment team in the Equipment & Plant Operator I position. This skilled role involves operating and maintaining a lime softening water treatment plant, performing mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic repairs, and ensuring water quality control. Employees work under the supervision of the Treatment Plant Supervisor.

Responsibilities
  1. Monitor plant machinery and equipment to ensure safety and proper operation.
  2. Maintain and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, electronic, and pneumatic systems, documenting maintenance activities.
  3. Control influent and effluent flow by adjusting filters and pumps.
  4. Conduct laboratory analysis for process control, recording and adjusting processes accordingly.
  5. Calculate and adjust chemical dosages for treatment processes.
  6. Conduct facility tours as required.
  7. Respond to emergency conditions on a rotating on-call basis.
  8. Calibrate electronic and analytical instruments.
  9. Perform general maintenance and custodial duties as time permits.
  10. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED, with studies in chemistry and physics.
  • Strong mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic skills.
  • Ability to understand and maintain complex water treatment systems.
  • Knowledge of HMI graphics and programming is desirable.
  • Basic mathematics skills.
  • Ability to operate tools and calibration equipment.
  • Ability to work independently, day or night, with minimal supervision.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Class "B" Illinois driver's license within two years.
  • Must obtain a Class "C" Water Supply Operators certificate within two years.
