Responsibilities
- Lift and transport patients to and from wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds, properly positioning and securing patients using proper body mechanics. Ensure patient comfort by being attentive and offering blankets. Follow all posted precaution signs.
- Transport patients to their destinations and handle other items such as patient belongings, specimens, carts, wheelchairs, and equipment.
- Immediately contact clinical staff regarding changes in a patient's condition or issues with patient's equipment during transport.
- Verify and document correct patient identification by comparing printed tickets and wristbands.
- Use electronic software to track the status of assignments.
- Collect, disinfect, inspect, and maintain transport equipment; report any repairs needed.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Handle collection of patient equipment from utility rooms and possibly pick-up/delivery of patient medication (excluding controlled substances).
Qualifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association, obtained within 6 months if not already certified.
- No formal education or experience required.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to complete safe patient handling training within one month of starting.
- Ability to assess equipment safety and determine optimal routes within the hospital.
Physical and Working Conditions
- Ability to walk up to 95% of the workday.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, and twist as needed.
- Exposure to blood, body fluids, contagious diseases, hazardous materials, and radiation; protective clothing required.
- Operate necessary equipment, including repetitive foot use.
- Lift up to 35 pounds without assistance; patient handling equipment used for heavier lifts with team assistance.
