Job description

Equipment Operator - Whetstone

Position Type: Classified (subject to Merit System Rules, Arizona Law)

Application Period: Opens May 1, 2025, Closes May 15, 2025, 5 p.m.

Salary and Benefits: $17.00 - $20.00 hourly, dependent on qualifications, plus comprehensive benefits including membership in the Arizona State Retirement System.

Note: All positions require a post-offer, pre-employment background screening. This safety-sensitive role is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.

Nature of Work

Under general supervision, performs skilled work of moderate to considerable difficulty in operating a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment. Performs related work as required or assigned. Tasks may include operating equipment, routine maintenance, and manual labor. Supervisory responsibilities may include overseeing small crews, including inmates.

Minimum Qualifications
  • One (1) year of experience operating construction or related equipment.
  • Valid Arizona Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain within 5 months of employment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Preference for applicants with a Class A CDL.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and surveying techniques.
  • Skill in operating and servicing equipment.
  • Mathematical skills for project computations.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely, perform manual labor, and communicate effectively.
  • Supervisory ability, including overseeing crews and possibly supervising inmates.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work is performed under various climatic conditions, potentially in confined spaces. Physical demands include lifting up to 50 pounds, walking, standing, and other motor skills. Mental demands include memory, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
