Job description

Position Summary:

The Underground Equipment Operator is an entry-level position responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical underground distribution systems at various locations. The role may require travel to other states based on customer demands.

Essential Functions:
  1. Work safely during new construction, maintenance, or repair of energized and de-energized underground systems.
  2. Assist with installing underground transformers and replacing fuses in transformers.
  3. Clear faulted circuits and systems, often working around energized high voltage systems with caution.
  4. Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good condition.
  5. Perform rigorous physical labor as required.
  6. Use company radio properly and operate heavy equipment with understanding.
  7. Learn basic rigging and proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
  8. Follow directions and learn about materials used in the work.
  9. Identify primary and secondary voltages, including induced voltage.
  10. Assist with installing and hooking up single-phase transformers, understanding equipment setup and grounding.
  11. Work safely at heights and in confined spaces, understanding minimum approach distances.
  12. Check transformer voltages and follow flag and tag procedures.
  13. Install and remove services, inspect rubber goods and PPE, and know when to wear PPE.
  14. Use Kellum grips properly and identify different material types.
  15. Willingness to glove/work live high voltage lines and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  16. Perform other related duties as required to complete the job.
Minimum Requirements:
  • At least 5 years of recent field experience.
  • Effective reading and communication skills in English.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days; CDL preferred.
  • Willingness to travel long distances on short notice and work in various locations.
  • Ability to lift over 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to work overtime, including weekends and holidays.
Physical Demands:

Regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, handle objects, and reach with hands and arms.

Work Environment:

Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and extreme conditions at construction sites. The work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions, often in loud environments.
