Job summary

The City of Fort Worth is seeking an Equipment Operator in Training in the Streets South Concrete section of the Transportation and Public Works Department. You will train to operate a range of motorized equipment and perform concrete-related maintenance tasks across city streets.

The role emphasizes safety, teamwork, and ongoing learning, with shifts Tue–Fri 7 am–5:30 pm and some evenings/weekends. A Class A license with a Tank endorsement must be earned within six months of hire.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma/GED
  • Valid Class C driver's license
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A Driver's License with a Tank Endorsement within six (6) months of hire
  • Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Bilingual (English & Spanish)
  • Additional construction repair and maintenance experience
  • Experience with power tools, hand tools, heavy equipment, and other tools related to concrete work and street maintenance
  • Basic computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Office

Responsibilities

  • Participates in a comprehensive training program to learn the operation of a variety of motorized equipment, including but not limited to front-end loaders, backhoes, sand trucks, dump trucks, and other related maintenance and construction equipment
  • Operates various hand tools
  • Performs basic, skilled, and semi-skilled tasks related to completion of assigned jobs, such as cutting branches, operating a jackhammer, shoveling asphalt, and concrete work
  • Assist in basic preventative maintenance on equipment as assigned. Inspects equipment before use. Completes daily operations reports and time sheets
  • Loads and unloads heavy materials and equipment by hand and with tools/machines
  • Meets with crew leader and other supervisory personnel to determine job methods and best use of motorized equipment
  • Performs all assigned tasks while adhering to the highest safety standards; works with the crew leader to remove unsafe conditions; assists with setup of traffic cones and barriers
  • Performs other duties as required

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Performs all assigned tasks while adhering to the highest safety standards. Works with the crew leader to remove any unsafe working conditions. Assists with the setup of traffic cones and barriers
  • Performs other duties as required
WORKING CONDITIONS

Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting; depending on assignment. Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations, chemicals, oils and workspace restrictions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Heavy Work - Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
