Job description

Essential Job Functions: Operates any or all of the following heavy-duty equipment used in concrete, asphalt, and street construction and maintenance: concrete truck, track loader backhoe, 2-14 yd. dump truck, street sweeper, jet/vacuum truck, water truck, mixer/reclaimer, road grader and excavator; transport heavy equipment; excavates; backfills excavations; sets up job site; services and makes minor repairs to equipment and reports malfunctions; trains lower level personnel; operates air compressor, and power washer; exercises extreme caution in equipment operation; uses small hand tools.

Other Job Functions: Cleans catch basins in emergency situations; interacts with citizens at job sites; maintains time sheets and reports; loads and unloads materials; may direct the activities of a small work crew. Works outside in all types of weather; may be exposed to extreme cold, heat, temperature swings, constant noise and working in trenches and ditches; exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards, explosions, fume/odor, dust/mites, chemicals and gas vapors. Must be available to work Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Must be available to work extended hours and different shifts as needed. Subject to 24 hour call out. Position considered essential during emergency situations.

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of concrete road construction and maintenance, operating characteristics and servicing of one or more types of assigned equipment; considerable knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment; knowledge of welding/burning procedures and techniques highly desirable.

Skills/Abilities: Skilled in the operation and servicing of assigned equipment; ability to operate equipment safely and skillfully in and around traffic, construction sites and work areas; ability to make minor operating adjustments and repairs and to recognize operating deficiencies in assigned equipment; ability to operate a chainsaw; ability to perform manual labor; ability to lead a small work crew; ability to read and write and to follow oral and written instructions; ability to deal with the public; ability to make mathematical calculations and complete necessary paperwork.

Physical Requirements: Constantly sees, hears and drives; frequently lifts, carries, pulls and pushes objects weighing up to 20 lbs.; climbs, cleans, sits, stands, twists body, walks; infrequently cleans, crawls, holds objects weighing up to 10 lbs.; lifts objects weighing up to 90 lbs.; pulls and pushes objects weighing up to 30 lbs.; squats, stoops and writes by hand.

Education/Experience: High school graduate or equivalent; minimum one (1) year experience in operation and servicing of various heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance.

Must possess a valid Class B-CDL driver’s license with a good driving record. Applicant selected for hire will be subject to a background investigation and drug/alcohol screen test. Other state valid Class B-CDL driver’s license with a good driving record will be considered. Texas state law requires within 30 days of residency, you must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
