Job summary

Town of Red Springs is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to operate backhoes, knuckle booms, street sweepers, and other municipal machinery. You will perform loading, trenching, mowing and public works tasks while navigating tight spaces and active utilities.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid NC CDL, and the ability to work in all weather conditions. Prior experience with heavy equipment and safe operation around traffic is essential.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school and experience driving and/or operating heavy equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License.
  • Plumbing experience desirable for positions working in distribution and collections.
  • May require Grade ICollection and/or Grade C Distribution Certifications.
  • Working knowledge of traffic laws governing equipment operation.

Responsibilities

  • Operates knuckle boom crane to load furniture, appliances, yard waste or other objects from curb into trucks for disposal.
  • Operates a street sweeper to clean town streets and identifies routes to reduce traffic impact.
  • Operates a backhoe to dig trenches for distribution and collection lines and ensures safety in trenches.
  • Operates large tractor with side arm or brush hog to mow fields and rights-of-way.
  • Operates leaf truck to vacuum leaves from curb side.
  • Washes and cleans equipment and performs routine service such as checking fluids, tire pressure, lights; may assist in repairs.
  • Participates in utility system taps, installations and repairs as needed.
  • Participates in mowing, trimming, repairing streets, cleaning catch basins and related public works tasks.
  • Must be able to perform basic life operational functions and heavy lifting as required.
  • Must be able to operate heavy equipment safely around traffic and utilities.

Job description

An employee in this class operates a backhoe, knuckleboom loader, street sweeper, garbage truck, dump truck mini excavator and/orother medium to heavy equipment independently.Work involves operating equipment in tight locations around undergroundand overhead utility lines and open trenches, near trees, parked cars andtraffic; designing a route that considers traffic issues and demand needs; andperforming maintenance and servicing of equipment used.Work may require the employee to serveon-call and respond to emergency call-back work.The employee is subject to hazards associatedwith public works including working in both inside and outside environments, inextreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loudnoises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals,odors, dust, mist, and oils.Work mayalso subject the employee to the final standards of OSHA on blood bornepathogens.Work is performed underregular supervision and is observed occasionally while in progress or uponcompletion

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operates knuckle boom craneto load furniture, appliances, yard waste or other objects from curb intotrucks for disposal; removes large piles of limbs and branches,construction debris, heavy furniture and appliances and places into large dumptrucks.
  • Operates a streetsweeper to clean town streets; identifies appropriate routes to reduce theimpact on and of traffic and to address work in an efficient way; participatesin change out of brushes; dumps refuse at the land fill; crawls undertruck to access inside for cleaning.
  • Operates a backhoe, excavatorto cut or dig ditches or other equipment to open trenches for constructionor replacement of distribution and collection lines; ensures deep trenchesare properly excavated, and shoring boxes are correctly and safely placedin trenches; ensures trench is properly filled and compacted when work iscompleted.
  • Operates a largetractor with side arm, or bush hog attachment; mows fields, rights-of-wayand vacant overgrown lots; notifies supervisor for billing; worksindependently to cover assigned route.
  • Operates leaf truck tovacuum leaves from curb side.
  • Washes and cleansassigned equipment; performs routine service such as checking fluid level,tire pressure, lights; greases, changes oil and filters; may assist onmore complex repairs.
  • May participate inand/or assist in making utility system taps, installations and repairs todistribution and collection lines, meters, meter boxes and relatedappurtenances.
  • Participates inmowing, trimming, repairing streets, cleaning catch basins, and relatedpublic works functions.
  • Must be able tophysically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing,stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, reaching,walking, lifting, and hearing.
  • Must be able toperform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; 20pounds of force frequently; and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to liftor otherwise move objects.
  • Must possess thevisual acuity to operate heavy construction equipment in a safe manner.
  • Graduation from high schooland experience driving and/or operating heavy equipment; or an equivalentcombination of education and experience.
Special Requirement
  • Possession of a validNorth Carolina Commercial Driver's License.

Desirable Training and Experience:

  • Working knowledge of the public works or utilities function to whichnormally assigned.
  • Skill in the operation and care of large, specialized equipment.
  • Ability to establish and follow an appropriate route working efficientlywithout close supervision.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisorsand crew members.
  • Ability to maintain simple records.
