Job description

Equipment Operator, Stormwater-Part Year

Performs the duties of an Equipment Operator for the Storm Water/Maintenance Division in the Public Works Department. Work hours are 10 hours per day, four days per week, Monday through Thursday.

This is a part-year position, with a maximum of 10 months, working 40 hours per week with an option for Medical coverage only. The hourly rate ranges from $22.77 to $30.74, with a hiring range of $22.77 to $26.76, depending on qualifications and experience.

The position remains open until filled.

Essential Job Functions
  • Maintain and repair stormwater infrastructure, including storm sewers, inlets, catch basins, manholes, channels, swales, BMPs, and related infrastructure.
  • Operate heavy and specialized equipment such as backhoes, loaders, tractors, flusher trucks, forklifts, dump trucks, street sweepers, skid steers, and others.
  • Drive pickup trucks to transport personnel, equipment, and materials.
  • Respond to emergencies like flooding, weather events, waste spills, and street hazards.
  • Assess risks and make field decisions under supervision.
  • Participate in flood response and snow removal training annually.
  • Report equipment issues and perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections and document findings.
Other Responsibilities

Perform general labor tasks as needed.

Qualifications

High School diploma or GED required. Experience with stormwater infrastructure, construction, and maintenance is highly desirable. Valid Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements is required. Certifications in flagging, traffic control, and confined space entry are preferred.

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of stormwater infrastructure maintenance and construction techniques.
  • Skilled in operating light to medium duty equipment and snow/ice control techniques.
  • Ability to work safely, keep records, and use basic computer software.
  • Flexibility to work odd hours, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergencies as part of an on-call rotation.
Physical and Working Conditions

Frequent strenuous physical effort; exposure to weather, heat, noise, and unpredictable conditions. Must be able to reach the office within 30 minutes and work overtime as needed, especially during emergencies.

Additional Information

This role requires a CDL, and employees are subject to drug testing. A background check and driving record review are part of the hiring process. The position is considered essential personnel during community emergencies.
