Responsible for the safe, economical, efficient operation and care of heavy solid waste equipment, primarily a Front Loader (FL), used to collect, transport, and dispose of commercial solid waste trash and recyclables in the Solid Waste Management Division of the Field Operations Department. This class may also operate other solid waste heavy and specialized equipment such as Automated Side Loader (ASL), Roll-Off (RO), Rear Loader (RL), Bulk Trash Case Tractor, Street Sweeper, and bin delivery equipment based on department need and/or on a regular basis.
- Operates all assigned heavy and light duty equipment using defensive driving techniques in accordance with policy, procedures, and training guidelines.
- Performs daily required DOT CDL pre- and post-trip inspections.
- Cautiously operates hydraulic hand controls to collect, dump, and compact garbage and recyclables into solid waste front load trucks while covering a designated route in residential or commercial zones. Unloads refuse trucks at landfills, transfer stations, or similar facilities.
- Accurately reads and follows a paper or digital route map/list.
- Performs manual duties in the cleanup of scattered refuse.
- Moves objects such as dumpsters on casters weighing up to 2,000 pounds.
- Moves objects such as trash bins and containers to perform daily work assignments. Opens and closes gates for walk-in service, unlocks and locks gates and dumpsters.
- Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment, including cleaning, fueling, checking oil, filling radiators, and maintaining tire pressure.
- Keeps daily logs of work performed, mileage, tons dumped, and equipment condition and performance.
- Completes accident report forms and timesheets accurately and promptly.
- Interacts with customers respectfully and with integrity.
- Operates a portable radio.
- Assists with training new Equipment Operators as needed.
- Operates city vehicles requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications include two (2) years of experience in operating solid waste heavy automotive and specialized equipment. Preferred: Qualification on trash collector Front Loader refuse truck. A valid Arizona CDL is required at the time of application.
Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may substitute for each year of required education.

- The functions, limitations, safe operating methods, and care required for a wide variety of complex solid waste equipment.
- Hazards and safety rules in heavy equipment operation.
- Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation.
- Advanced operation, maintenance, and servicing of all solid waste equipment; and street layouts and routes.
- Department of Transportation (DOT) FMCSA regulations related to CDL license holders in safety-sensitive functions.

Special Requirements
- A valid Arizona Class B CDL at application time.
- Availability to work holidays, weekends, overtime, and during special events.
- This position is safety-sensitive, requiring drug and alcohol testing before employment and periodically thereafter, in accordance with the City of Glendale policy. A post-offer physical assessment is also required. The City covers all testing costs.
