Job description

Position: Equipment Operator

Position Summary

Operate one or several types of power construction equipment to excavate, move, and/or grade material.

Experience Level

Intermediate

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
  1. Operate a variety of vehicles and large heavy equipment while performing maintenance and repairs on roads and rights-of-way, including loading, hauling, and dumping on various surfaces.
  2. Load gravel, dirt, and sand; smooth and grade roads; spread rock and gravel.
  3. Trench and construct ditches for installation of culverts, water pipes, and sewer pipes; remove silt and debris.
  4. Check and maintain all fluid levels and lubrication of equipment.
  5. Instruct and train employees in the safe operation of construction equipment and tools, as well as job techniques and skills.
  6. Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify errors, problems, or defects.
Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of skills and abilities required for the position.
  • Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions; communicate effectively with management and supervision.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and layout tools safely and efficiently.
Requirements
  • Must be able to move constantly around a construction/industrial site, including standing, walking, sitting, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • Work outdoors in changing weather conditions.
  • Work irregular hours, including weekends, overtime, and holidays.
  • Use ladders, mechanical platforms, manlifts, or scaffolds to access equipment or work areas, which may be over 200 feet high.
  • Move and work around confined, cluttered, and uneven surfaces.
  • Complete tasks in noisy and dusty environments.
  • Move items weighing up to 50 pounds across construction sites.
  • Possess required tools.
  • Follow all safety and project rules; perform other duties as required.
  • Pass pre-access drug and alcohol testing, medical fitness, and background checks.
