Position: Equipment Operator

Practical Exams and Interviews will be conducted on an ongoing basis.

Additional pay incentives and premiums include:

  • $1,250 Recruitment Bonus
  • $1,250 Bonus after successful completion of the probation period

In addition to the base salary, employees may receive a $0.50/hour premium while tree trimming and $0.25/hour while operating a motor sweeper.

The County of San Diego's Department of Public Works maintains and enhances community infrastructure. We are seeking a skilled Equipment Operator to join our team, responsible for maintaining storm drains, roadways, and rights-of-way, operating repair equipment, and performing manual labor with hand tools. The ideal candidate has a strong work ethic and a commitment to safety.

We have multiple vacancies across various geographic areas, including Campo, Julian, Fallbrook, and Valley Center. Applicants should specify all acceptable work locations on their application.

Hiring Process and Timeline:

  1. Job offer and background check after practical exam and interview.
  2. Pre-employment medical screening, approximately 3 days after background clearance.
  3. Start date based on medical clearance or mutually agreed date.

If not selected, you may be eligible for future vacancies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid California Class B driver's license with tank and air brake endorsements and a current medical card.
  • Two years' experience in roadway construction/repair with operation of motorized equipment OR one year as a Road Maintenance Worker with the County of San Diego.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid California Class B driver's license with endorsements, maintained throughout employment.
  • Current medical certificate, maintained throughout employment.

The practical exam assesses skills with equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, shovels, fiber rolls, and either backhoe, motorgrader, or skidsteer. Candidates must bring their valid California Class B license with endorsements to the exam.
