Job description

An Equipment Operator operates a variety of specialized equipment and vehicles used in the cleaning and/or paving of streets, grass cutting of city-owned lots, etc. Incumbents perform minor maintenance work on the equipment and are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the equipment. S/he follows general directions including work orders to determine work to be done and routes to be taken, from a superior who performs periodic work inspections. Supervision may be exercised over Laborers, Laborers I and Laborer II.

Performs work involving the cleaning of streets, snow removal, trash pick-up, constructions, paving and patching of streets, cutting grass and weeds in city-owned lots;

Operates a variety of specialized equipment, including but not limited, as follows:

  1. Hi-lift with Bucket, used to pick-up debris from street or curb;
  2. Hi-Lift with Wing Plow, used for removal of snow from streets;
  3. Hydraulic Broom (Street Sweeper);
  4. Grass Cutter/York Rake, used to clear lots and city-owned property;
  5. Pavement Rollers, used in the spreading and smoothing of asphalt for paving/repaving of city streets;
  6. Backhoe, used for digging concrete for street paving;
  7. Dump Truck (with or without a plow), Unimog, Salt Spreader, Street Flusher and other related equipment.

Performs minor maintenance on equipment which includes daily checking of zerk fittings and grease when necessary, draining of air brakes, checking fuel and oil levels, steam cleaning throughout, as required;

- reports problems with equipment and documents same;

Sets up and maintains safety zones;

Wears safety equipment as required;

May perform pre-test of equipment before use in accordance with directions from NYS Department of Motor Vehicles;

Performs any task related to maintenance of vehicles/upkeep of garage;

Performs manual work in connection with the operation of specialized regular equipment;

Performs related duties as required.

Applicants must have one year of full-time experience in the operation of specialized equipment and vehicles, including a dump truck with a plow.

Note: Verification of experience, affidavit from employer, must be presented at time of filing application. Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements.

Special Requirement

  1. Possession of a current Class A or Class B Commercial Drivers License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles which must be presented at time of filing application and must be maintained during employment. Note: License must allow you to operate vehicles with air-brakes.
  2. Must successfully complete training in the operation of a hi-lift with a bucket (front end loader), hydraulic broom (street sweeper) and a dump truck with a wing plow and must obtain and present certification from the Department of Public Works, Parks & Streets within six months of date of appointment.

Ability to operate a variety of specialized and regular automotive equipment;

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
