Job description

Performs intermediate semiskilled work transporting materials and equipment to job sites, assisting crew when necessary, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Utilities Supervisor.

  • Operates various light equipment; transports and removes materials from job sites.

  • Transports small equipment required at job sites.

  • Communicates with coordinators, other operators, and crew members regarding various aspects of the job.

  • Assists crews with manual labor.

  • Completes a pre-trip inspection of equipment and vehicle.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws; thorough knowledge of industry standard and department specific equipment and materials; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; ability to perform manual labor; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience operating a dump truck, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work requires the ability to maneuver up to one (1) mile on foot;work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and pushing or pulling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements

  • Valid NC Minimum Class A Commercial Driver’s License with ability to obtain tanker endorsement within 90 days of employment.
  • Required to work On Call rotation.
  • Alternating schedule change during winter months.
