Job description

Position Summary

Operate one or several types of power construction equipment to excavate, move, and/or grade material.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Operate a variety of vehicles and large heavy equipment while performing maintenance and repairs on roads and rights-of-way, including loading, hauling, and dumping on smooth to extremely rough surfaces.
  2. Load gravel, dirt, and sand; smooth and grade roads; spread rock and gravel.
  3. Trench and construct ditches for installation of culverts, water pipes, and sewer pipes; remove silt and debris.
  4. Maintain knowledge of equipment, including checking and maintaining all fluid levels and lubrication.
  5. Instruct and train employees in the safe operation of construction equipment and tools, as well as job techniques and skills (if asked).
  6. Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify errors, problems, or defects.
  7. Estimate sizes, distances, and quantities; determine time, costs, resources, or materials needed for work activities.
  8. Inspect subordinate's work for compliance with contract plans and specifications, point out deficiencies, and take corrective actions as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with relevant experience preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
  • Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions; communicate effectively with management.
  • Proficient in the safe and efficient use of electrical, hand tools, power tools, layout tools, and measurement tools.

Requirements

  • Ability to move about a construction/industrial site constantly; stand, walk, sit, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
  • Work in outdoor conditions with changing weather.
  • Work irregular hours, including weekends, overtime, and holidays.
  • Climb and maintain balance on ladders, scaffolds, and other elevated platforms.
  • Work in confined, cluttered, and uneven spaces.
  • Perform tasks in noisy and dusty environments.
  • Move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Possess required tools and licenses.
  • Observe safety and project rules; perform other duties as required.
  • Pass pre-access drug and alcohol testing and medical evaluation.
