Job description

Equipment Operator III - Water Distribution

The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified applicants for an Equipment Operator III in our Water Distribution Division. The person in this role will be responsible for driving various types of equipment to and from job sites, transporting crew, and performing routine maintenance on vehicles.

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Operating construction and system maintenance equipment such as backhoes, excavators, trenchers, and dump trucks.
  • Transporting heavy equipment, supplies, and materials to job sites.
  • Performing safety checks, maintenance, and minor repairs on equipment and tools.
  • Assisting with loading/unloading materials, job site tasks, and maintaining clean equipment and work areas.
  • Lifting up to 75 lbs., climbing, standing, pulling, bending, and stooping throughout the workday.
  • Assisting workers as required.

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes, equivalent to four years of high school or equivalent education.

Minimum two years of experience as an Equipment Operator; underground utility system experience is highly preferred.

Valid driver's license is required; depending on assignment, a valid CDL Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement may be needed. Certifications such as Sprayer Technician or CPR may be required. The preferred candidate will possess a Class A CDL.

Pre-employment testing on the operation of a backhoe may be required.

Work Location: Combined Operations, 1316 Ballentine Blvd.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.

This is an 'Essential' position; extended, rotating, on-call hours, nights, weekends, and holidays may be required in response to emergencies or severe weather.
