Job description

Job Opportunity: Equipment Operator III - Wastewater Division

The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified applicants for an Equipment Operator III position in our Wastewater Division. The role involves operating various types of equipment, transporting crew and materials, and performing routine vehicle maintenance.

Essential Functions
  1. Operate construction and wastewater system maintenance equipment such as backhoes, jet/vactor cleaners, trenchers, and dump trucks.
  2. Transport heavy equipment, supplies, and materials to job sites.
  3. Perform safety checks, routine maintenance, and minor repairs on equipment and tools.
  4. Assist with loading/unloading materials, completing job site tasks, and maintaining clean equipment and work areas.
  5. Lift up to 75 lbs., and perform physical activities such as climbing, standing, pulling, and bending throughout the workday.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of operational, technical, or office processes relevant to the role.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (4 years).
  • At least two years of experience as an Equipment Operator; underground utility system experience preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license; CDL required. Class A Commercial Driver’s License preferred.
  • May require CDL with Tanker Endorsement within six months of hire.
  • Pre-employment equipment operation testing may be required.
Additional Details

Work Location: Combined Operations, 1316 Ballentine Blvd.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; standby duty rotation may be required.

Benefits: Position eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.

Note: This is an 'Essential' position; extended, rotating, on-call, night, weekend, and holiday work may be required in response to emergencies or severe weather.
