Job description

Equipment Operator III - Wastewater (Linework Crew)

The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified applicants for an Equipment Operator III position in our Wastewater Division. The role involves driving various equipment to and from job sites, transporting crew members, and performing routine maintenance on vehicles.

Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To:

  • Operate construction and wastewater system maintenance equipment such as backhoes, jet/vactor cleaners, trenchers, and dump trucks.
  • Transport heavy equipment, supplies, and materials to job sites.
  • Perform safety checks, maintenance, and minor repairs on equipment and tools.
  • Assist with loading/unloading materials, completing job site tasks, and maintaining clean equipment and work areas.
  • Lift up to 75 lbs., and stand, climb, pull, and bend throughout the workday.

Work requires knowledge comparable to four years of high school education or equivalent. Candidates should have two years of experience as an Equipment Operator, with underground utility system experience highly preferred.

Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred. A Class A Commercial Driver's License is desired. May require CDL with Tanker Endorsement within six months of hire depending on assignment. Pre-employment equipment operation testing may be necessary.

Work Location: Combined Operations, 1316 Ballentine Blvd.
Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; standby duty rotation may be required.

This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus. It is designated as an 'Essential' position, and extended, rotating, on-call work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, may be required in response to emergencies or severe weather.
