Job summary

The County of Volusia is seeking an experienced Equipment Operator III for the Solid Waste Division, based at the Tomoka Landfill in Port Orange, FL. You will operate bulldozers, excavators, loaders, and other heavy equipment to support daily landfill operations.

A strong emphasis on safety and reliability is required, with duties including directing truck traffic, performing inspections, and routine maintenance. The role may require outdoor work and weekend shifts.

Qualifications

Completion of the eight (8) grade and three (3) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment.
Possession of a valid Florida CDL of a class determined by the division/department of assignment within six (6) months of hire and maintain thereafter.
A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.

Responsibilities

Operates a heavy bulldozer and maintains a sanitary landfill.
Directs truck drivers to dumping locations.
Operates excavator and front-end loader.
Operates landfill compactor and a semi-trailer with walking floor.
Loads dirt, mulch, and other construction materials.
Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment before and after use.
May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.

Job description

Major Functions

The County of Volusia is seeking an experienced Equipment Operator III for the Solid Waste Division. This position is located at the Tomoka Landfill in Port Orange, Florida and will be responsible for operating heavy equipment for daily operations. This position requires a high degree of proficiency and dexterity in operating landfill heavy equipment. The candidate must be able to operate a bulldozer, excavator, front-end loader, landfill compactor, semi-truck, and waste separation equipment.

NOTE: This position’s schedule will be four (4) 10 hours days, which may include Saturdays and holidays. This position will be exposed to outdoor elements, fumes, dust, uneven ground, low/high temperatures, wet and/or high humidity.

Overtime may be required, and schedules may change based on operational needs.

Illustrative Duties

Operates a heavy bulldozer and maintains a sanitary landfill.
Directs truck drivers to dumping locations
. Operates a bulldozer in fill area.
Operates off road dump truck.
Transports equipment to and from construction site
. Participates generally in the laboring work of the crew as workload demands.
Operates excavator.
Operates front end loader.
Loads dirt, mulch, and other construction materials.
Operates landfill compactor.
Operates a semi-trailer with walking floor on regional roadways and in a landfill working environment.
Operates a large front-end loader in an enclosed waste transfer facility with truck traffic using tipping floor attachments.
Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use.
Performs routine service and maintenance.
May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs
.Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
Must adhere to Federal, State,
County and Local ordinances.
Responds to emergency situations.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Completion of the eight (8) grade and three (3) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment.

Possession of a valid Florida CDL of a class determined by the division/department of assignment within six (6) months of hire and maintain thereafter.

A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver license.

Preferred Candidate

having met the minimum requirements; will possess a Florida CDL Class A, and have at least one (1) year of experience in the operation of landfill equipment to include a bulldozer, excavator, front end loader, landfill compactor, semi-truck and waste separation equipment, and be familiar with Solid Waste operational practices or principles.

NOTE: A pre-employment skills test will be required.

Thorough, demonstrated knowledge of the operation and safety precautions of the particular equipment to which assignment is made.

Physical Demands

Ability to perform essential duties and responsibilities and meet the minimum qualifications. Ability to lift, push (arm and leg), pull 50 pounds, reach, climb, visual acuity (depth perception and peripheral vision) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle; sit turn (neck and body), and handle.

Environmental Demands

Outside work. Exposure to inclement weather (heat, humidity, cold, rain), fumes, odors, noise, vibration, dust, poor ventilation.

Mental Demands

Ability to read and comprehend operational and safety instructions, procedures, rules, policies, warnings, memos. Ability to write simple sentences relaying information, data, and details. Ability to perform basic math.
