Job description

This position is responsible for the operation of trucks and related heavy equipment in the operation, maintenance of grounds, roads, right of ways, and infrastructure. Responsible for operating complex and specialized heavy equipment, inspecting and maintaining equipment, and performing related work as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Cuts fallen trees; mows grass; cleans curbs and drainage ditches; trims hedges; picks up litter; cleans fountains.
  • Stocks and issues supplies to crews; maintains an inventory of all motorized equipment.
  • Transports equipment to work sites and the repair shop.
  • Assists with traffic control at work sites; places signs; flags traffic.
  • Ensures that crews have the appropriate supplies and materials.
  • Operates dump trucks, street sweepers, tractors, front end loaders, back hoes, stump grinders, quick cuts, grab alls, bucket trucks, flatbed trucks, chainsaws, and chippers.
  • Patrols city streets to identify eyesores on city property.
  • Prepares reports on accidents and injuries.
  • Assists in supervising inmates; transports injured employees.
  • Performs inspections of equipment and vehicles.
  • Assists other departments in removing trees and spreading mulch and pine straw.
  • Responds to customer complaints and questions.
  • Serves on the safety committee; serves as the safety manager for the department; trains other department employees for CDL.
  • Responds to 911 pages.
  • Supervises community service workers.
  • Prepares work orders, daily work sheets, and accident reports.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the rules and precautions related to roadway and equipment safety.
  • Knowledge of supervisory techniques.
  • Knowledge of city radio functions and codes.
  • Knowledge of the techniques of tree planting.
  • Skill in the operation of dump trucks, street sweepers, tractors, front end loaders, back hoes, stump grinders, quick cuts, grab alls, bucket trucks, flatbed trucks, chainsaws, and chippers.
  • Skill in reading maps.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. This position is required to supervise state inmate labor. Employee must pass the Department of Corrections three-day certification within the time frame required by this department which is normally six months but may be altered.

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

  • Climbing – ascending, descending ladders, stairs, ramps, requires body agility.
  • Crouching – bending body forward by bending leg, spine.
  • Feeling – perceiving attributes of objects by touch with skin, fingertips.
  • Grasping – applying pressure to object with fingers, palm.
  • Handling – picking, holding, or working with whole hand.
  • Hearing – perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, receive information.
  • Kneeling – bending legs at knee to come to rest at knees.
  • Lifting – raising objects from lower to higher position, moving objects side to side, using upper extremities, back.
  • Manual Dexterity – picking, pinching, typing, working with fingers rather than hand.
  • Mental Acuity – ability to make rational decisions through sound logic, deductive reasoning.
  • Pulling - use upper extremities to exert force, haul or tug.
  • Pushing – use upper extremities to press against objects with force, or thrust forward, downward, outward.
  • Reaching – extending hands or arms in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
  • Speaking – expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
  • Standing – for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping – bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.

The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
