Job summary

Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County is seeking a skilled Transfer Station Operator to move and compact refuse, operate backhoes, loaders, grapplers, and compactors. The role requires reading and following operating procedures, daily equipment checks, and basic maintenance to ensure safe, efficient site operations.

Ideal candidates have at least 2 years of heavy equipment experience, basic math, and the ability to work with the public and colleagues.

Qualifications

• Minimum eighth grade education.
• Two years’ experience in heavy equipment operation.
• Any combination of experience, education and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Responsibilities

• Operates front-end loaders, stationary and mobile grapplers, compactors, backhoes and related equipment for daily Transfer Station operations.
• Inspects equipment before starting work, checks lubricants, cooling systems, hydraulic and electrical systems; reports malfunctions.
• Performs minor mechanical maintenance including daily lubrication and cleaning of equipment.
• Performs transfer station duties such as drain system cleaning and grounds clean-up.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Position Summary

Full Salary Range – $43,726.38 – $76,521.12.

Hiring Range – $43,726.38 – $51,925.07 (based on years of verifiable experience).

Skilled work in the operation of equipment used to move and compact refuse at a rate required for proper operation of a Transfer Station. Employees in this class must be able to operate specialized mobile equipment including backhoes, front-end loaders, excavators, and grizzlies. This employee assists in the repair, upkeep and maintenance of any of the stationary equipment found on site including but not limited to; heavy equipment, tractors trailers, stationary or mobile boom grapplers. Employee is responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of equipment according to a prescribed operating plan. Work requires a high degree of manipulative skill and dexterity.

Essential Functions & Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Operates any of the following types of equipment; front-end loaders, stationary and mobile grapplers, compactors, backhoes, and other related equipment as necessary for the daily operation of a Transfer Station.
• Inspects equipment before starting work, check lubricants, cooling system, hydraulic and electrical systems and makes minor adjustments as necessary. Reports all malfunctions to Supervisory Staff.
• Performs minor mechanical maintenance work including daily lubrication and cleaning of equipment.
• Performs various manual tasks involved in transfer station operation such as the cleaning of the drain system, grounds clean‑up, etc.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses

• Minimum eighth (8th) grade education.
• Two (2) years’ experience in heavy equipment operation.
• Any combination of experience education and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Certificates and Licences

• Valid Florida Drivers License, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A preferred.
