Job description

Under supervision, the Equipment Operator II operates a variety of material moving equipment used in the maintenance and repair of streets, right-of-way, and water and sewer collection systems. Typical projects include repairing asphalt, hauling materials, plowing snow, mowing grass, and excavating trenches to repair pipes. This is the second level in a three-tier series, distinguished by the operation of a greater variety of medium to heavy duty equipment. Incumbents are expected to operate equipment requiring a higher level of skill compared to Equipment Operator I, but are proficient in operating the same basic equipment.

Scope of Responsibility

Incumbents typically receive work direction from a higher-level equipment operator or crew lead. They may also provide training to Equipment Operator I. The role involves operating high-value equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Operate equipment related to departmental work functions.
  2. Operate various material moving equipment for maintenance and repair tasks, requiring coordination to operate levers, joysticks, pedals, etc.
  3. Follow engineered drawings and survey stakes to excavate within designated work zones.
  4. Apply safe operating practices and awareness of surroundings to prevent injury or damage.
  5. Use spotters, flaggers, or helpers as needed for safety.
  6. Monitor equipment condition, troubleshoot malfunctions, and report repairs.
  7. Inspect equipment before and after use, report repairs, and recommend shutdown if necessary.
  8. Ensure equipment is fueled, lubricated, and tires are inflated.
  9. Listen to and observe equipment during operation to detect malfunctions.
  10. Clean equipment and operator area as needed.
  11. Assist Maintenance Technicians with major repairs.
  12. Complete and submit logs for fuel, mileage, and service hours.
  13. Communicate professionally and courteously, maintaining good working relationships.
  14. Provide basic information to the public when approached.
  15. Interact regularly with team members to exchange work-related information.
  16. Follow safety guidelines and practices at all times.
  17. Adhere to department and city rules, and use proper protective equipment.
  18. Identify and report unsafe conditions.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned.
Addendum: Public Works

The Public Works Operator II works on a variable schedule, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and on-call standby during snow season. Responsibilities include operating medium and heavy equipment, performing street and utility maintenance, and interacting with the public with courtesy.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and three years of related experience. Must possess a Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement or obtain one within 6 months.

  • Knowledge of laws and regulations regarding equipment operation on public streets.
  • Knowledge of confined space entry and hazardous materials handling.
  • Skills in basic math, reading, and writing.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

Work is mostly field-based or in vehicles, involving moderate to heavy physical effort, including lifting, climbing, and exposure to adverse conditions such as dirt, noise, weather, and odors. Heavy lifting of over 100 pounds may be required occasionally.
