Job Description: Heavy Equipment Operator

The purpose of this classification is to operate heavy trucks and equipment and assist work crews with city construction, maintenance projects, and solid waste collection.

Responsibilities include:

1. Driving heavy trucks and operating various equipment such as industrial broom, tractors, forklift, street sweeper, water truck, dump truck, boom truck, patch truck, tree trimmer, loaders, excavator, and related machinery.
2. Performing pre-trip inspections to ensure safe operations, routine maintenance, minor repairs, and preparing trucks for daily assignments.
3. Overseeing work activities of crews and assisting in training new employees.
4. Operating heavy trucks and equipment for garbage and debris collection, ensuring loads are secure.
5. Performing tasks like mowing, cutting concrete/asphalt, tamping, tree cutting, pipe installation, grading ditches, and other related duties.
6. Locating and digging manholes, removing debris, cleaning pumping stations, and constructing sewer structures.
7. Preparing production and maintenance reports, operating radios, and providing assistance to other city crews.
8. Flagging traffic around work sites as needed.

Additional Functions:

• Performing other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED, supplemented by vocational/technical training.
• Two (2) years of experience or training in heavy equipment operation or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements; Sewer: Class III Wastewater Collection Systems Certification preferred.
