Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE

The Equipment Operator is responsible for operating all equipment at the Veteran Cemetery for the interments and the maintenance of the cemetery.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Employees have no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Duties

Possesses and maintains a valid driver’s license.

Able to drive and take care of all cemetery equipment.

Install and realign headstones.

Assist at the cemetery shelter to unload and reload caskets and urns.

Transport caskets and urns to the final resting place and follows the Veterans Administration and Texas Veterans Land Board regulations for burials in the cemetery.

Ensures new gravesites are leveled appropriately and in compliance with the National Cemetery Association.

Assist in all areas of the burial process and maintenance of the Veterans Cemetery.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent, and
  • One year of related experience.
  • A Veteran of any branch of military service; preferred, but not required.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
  • Skill in the operation of listed equipment.
  • Working knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used to perform burials of caskets and urns.
  • General knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
  • Ability to work independently, and as a team member, to complete daily activities in accordance with the work schedule.
  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Ability to communicate orally, and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the visitors to the cemetery.

Special Requirements

  • Must have a valid Texas driver’s license within sixty (60) days of hire.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license by date of hire.

Tools and Equipment Used

Pickup truck, backhoe, dump truck, lawn and landscaping equipment, including tractors, tool cat, mini excavator, mowers, aerifier, chain saw, edgers, tool cat, hammer drill, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems, welding equipment, miscellaneous hand, and power tools for turf maintenance; carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and cement finishing work; janitorial equipment, and safety equipment as required.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This position requires heavy physical effort with reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate the different sets of controls while operating the equipment and attachments.

The employee may be subjected to considerable strain caused by vibration, jerking, and jolting of the equipment over rough surfaces and the need to operate controls in awkward positions.

Heavy effort is frequently exercised when performing duties such as tamping, carrying caskets/urns, lifting/moving grave planks, setting headstones, markers, niche covers, etc.

The employee is frequently required to stand and must be able to walk on hilly, flat, or rolling terrain. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk and hear.

This position requires the employee to frequently lift and/or move weights up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move items weighing more than 100 pounds with assistance from co-workers.

Employees may be exposed to noise levels exceeding 85 dBA for up to eight (8) hours per day. This exposure may adversely affect hearing. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions. Employees will be exposed to sun, noise, extreme heat, and humidity, cold, snow, rain, wind, and are subject to dirt, dust, fumes (from motor and exhaust), mud, and water.

Work is performed in areas where pesticides, insecticides, and fertilizers are applied. Appropriate protective equipment will be worn.
