Job summary

The City of Killeen is seeking candidates for a maintenance role to operate diverse equipment in the upkeep of street and utility systems. The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma and experience in operating light to medium equipment. Responsibilities include preparing concrete, managing traffic control, and adhering to safety regulations while performing physically demanding tasks outdoors.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school graduation and 6 months of equipment operating experience.
  • Valid Texas CDL Class B is mandatory.
  • Must acquire N.I.M.S. certifications within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Operate various trucks and equipment for street maintenance.
  • Prepare and finish concrete for curbs and gutters.
  • Control traffic at work sites by flagging.

Job description

To operate a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of street, water, sewer, and storm drainage systems.


CORE COMPETENCIES:

Operates trucks of various sizes and weighs in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies

Operates a variety of contractor’s equipment and trucks utilized in construction maintenance and repair activities

Operates small equipment and tools to maintain streets

Prepares concrete for curbs and gutters

Rakes Asphalt

Places and finishes concrete

Places and applies traffic control devices

Controls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or assigned

Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations; possesses and maintains a valid driver’s license and comply with City of Killeen driving policy.

Performs all On-call assignments as outlined in On-Call Schedule and Departmental Policy.

Performs other duties as assigned.Education and Experience:

  1. Graduation from high school or equivalent, and
  2. Six (6) months of experience involving the use of light and medium equipment
Special Requirements:

  1. Must have a valid Texas CDL Class B
  2. Must have or acquire within thirty (30) days from date of hire all National Institute Management Systems (N.I.M.S.) certifications as required by City and position
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Considerable knowledge of light equipment operating principles
  2. Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to light equipment operations
  3. Working knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in street and utility maintenance work
  4. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment
  5. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  6. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  7. Ability to observe proper safety precautions
  8. Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public
  9. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions
  10. Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions
  11. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance

Tools and Equipment Used
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including backhoe, payloader, excavator, maintainer, skid steer, pneumatic roller, steel wheel roller, 2000 gallon water truck, dump truck, and common hand and power tools, shovels, concrete saw, pick, jackhammer, chain saw, bull float, hand derby, asphalt rake, post hole auger, thermoplastic applicator, wacker packer, plate packer, walk behind roller, walk behind cut saw, weed eater, edger, pole saw, riding and push mower, etc…) and safety equipment as required.
