DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Drives or operates equipment of a medium size including very large or heavy trucks such as a large dump truck, front end loader, and backhoes; provides routine maintenance to vehicle or equipment; reports serious mechanical difficulties for repair; adjusts equipment as needed in specialized operations; loads and unloads materials; performs physical labor as required; may lead a crew in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of water and sewer lines, water meters and fire hydrants; operates high pressure wash trucks; excavating and backfilling with backhoes. May operate as a relief operator on equipment of a higher class. Performs related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIRED: Completion of high school or equivalent. May be required to have a CDL depending on type of equipment required to operate.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED: 3 years experience with heavy equipment. Ability to supervise a small crew in simple operations; understand and organize daily assignments or work to be accomplished. Needs to have a working knowledge of occupational hazards of the work and necessary safety precautions, knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations applicable to the operation of assigned equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and the ability to identify defects in assigned equipment and to make minor repairs.
