Job summary

The City of Denison is seeking a skilled equipment operator in the Public Works Division to drive and operate trucks and specialized machinery, and perform routine maintenance.

You will work largely within city limits, follow established procedures, train lower level personnel, and may supervise others as needed. This position requires a high school diploma or GED and a valid commercial driver's license, with a willingness to work evenings or weekends when required.

  • Six months of driving trucks or operating light equipment, or equivalent education/experience.

Responsibilities

  • Drives and operates specialized equipment used in the Division.

Description

Performs work involving the operation of trucks and/or specialized equipment used in the Public Works Division. The employee performs related work as required.

Essential Functions
  • Drives and operates specialized equipment used in the Division
  • Independently performs assigned work specific to our this Division within the City limits
  • Makes minor adjustments to and participates in the cleaning and servicing of equipment utilized.
  • Provides on-the-job training to lower level personnel.
  • May operate more complex equipment for training and relief purposes.
  • The employee may refer to route maps but generally receives work assignments in the form of oral instructions which are specific and simple. Judgment and decision making are limited to determining the technique or method of action in completing a particular task. The supervisor is consulted when existing guidelines do not adequately cover a situation.
  • The employee performs a limited to moderate number of tasks using some judgments and decision making based on knowledge and experience to determine course of action or technique to use. Instructions usually are of moderate difficulty and the employee follows established procedures.
  • May be called upon to direct the work of other employees and crew members.
  • The employee normally receives and instructions but may receive written instructions. Methods of accomplishing assignments are determined by established procedures. Deadlines and priorities are determined by the supervisor. The employee’s work progress, accuracy and completeness are monitored routinely. The employee is also expected to keep the supervisor informed of work progress.
  • Most contacts are with fellow employees and supervisors although the employee may have incidental contact with the general public while working at job sites.
  • The employee’s contact with the general public involves giving out routine factual information or responding to routine inquiry
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Good knowledge of geographic layout of the City.
  • Good knowledge of the operating characteristics, methods, techniques, procedures and maintenance of machines and equipment operated.
  • Good skill in operation and use of equipment.
  • Sufficient skill in writing to complete simple records.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees.
Typical Qualifications
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Must have high school diploma/GED
  • Valid commercial operator’s license required at time of placement. Must have driving record sufficient for coverage by City’s auto liability carrier.
  • Skill in the operation of heavy equipment/vehicles and other equipment used within the division.
  • This knowledge and skill would be gained by completion of at least six (6) months of experience in driving trucks or operating light equipment OR any combination of education and experience leading to the same level of knowledge and skill.

  • Frequent amounts of driving
  • Ability to lift and/or carry objects ranging from 1-25 pounds

  • Frequently able to step and down to enter and exit City properties
  • Occasionally required to squat, kneel and crawl as job requires
  • Frequently required to bend, climb, reach above head or below shoulder level
  • Ability to work in inclement weather as required
  • Must be able to climb ladders, kneel, stoop, bend, twist, crawl, write, walk, push, pull, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. of equipment and material;
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather and hazardous conditions including mechanical, fumes, odors, dust/mist,
  • Follow oral and written directives; work well under pressure and stress; meet deadlines; deal effectively and efficiently, in a pleasant manner, with the general public, employees and with distraught and irate citizens.
  • Must be able to work extensive hours after 5:00 pm as well as weekend work.
  • Must be able to attend evening meetings that may go long into the night, availability to work weekends and odd hours when needed.
  • Must be able to maintain consistent attendance.
