Job description

County of Volusia Equipment Operator I

The County of Volusia is seeking an experienced Equipment Operator I for the Road and Bridge division. This position will be located at various locations throughout Volusia County and involves semi-skilled work in operating less complex equipment to complete road maintenance and drainage tasks. The role includes performing daily safety inspections of assigned equipment before and after use.

Note: This position is posted on a continuous basis and may close without notice. These duties are illustrative; omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.

Responsibilities:
  1. Operate mowers, tractors with mowing attachments, and commercial trucks (less than 10 wheels, over 8,000 pounds gross weight, including dump, flatbed, and water wagons).
  2. Drive fuel trucks and service equipment with fuel.
  3. Operate small machinery and hand tools such as cement mixers, air compressors, hammers, pumping equipment, and saws.
  4. Set signs and barricades.
  5. Participate in laboring work of the crew.
  6. Perform safety inspections and routine maintenance of equipment.
  7. Work at various county locations as needed and respond to emergency situations.
  8. Attend work regularly and adhere to all relevant ordinances.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of eighth grade and one year of experience with operation and maintenance of commercial light to medium trucks or similar equipment. Equivalent education, training, or experience may be considered. Must possess a valid driver’s license at hire and maintain it, along with a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days and a Florida CDL Class B within six months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of operation, maintenance, and safety of trucks and public works equipment.
  • Understanding of traffic regulations and safety precautions.
  • Skill in operating trucks and equipment safely and making emergency repairs.
  • Ability to follow instructions, establish effective relationships, and work under stress.
  • Ability to relocate as needed and respond to emergencies.
ADA Requirements:

Mental: Ability to read, comprehend, and communicate operational and safety instructions, perform basic math.

Physical: Heavy work involving lifting up to 75 pounds, reaching, climbing, sitting, and visual acuity for operating vehicles.

Environmental: Outside work with exposure to weather, fumes, noise, dust, and other environmental conditions.
