Job description

St. James Parish Government is hiring for Equipment Operator I in the Road, Bridge & Drainage Division under the Operations Department.

JOB FUNCTION: Drives or operates gasoline or diesel-powered light equipment such as trucks, tractors, side-arm/boom mower tractors, bush-hogs, or other equipment to maintain parish property, servitude, rights-of-way; and to repair roads and other facilities. The distinction between a Laborer II and this position concerns the use of more complicated equipment. This position is classified as essential during declared emergencies or natural disasters. This is a nonexempt position, forty hours per week. This position is “Safety Sensitive” and subject to random drug testing as per the St. James Parish Government Employee Handbook. Individuals in this class can complete the majority of their projects/assignments with a minimum amount of supervision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes any combination of the following illustrative examples of duties and responsibilities including but not limited to:

  1. Performs routine inspection and maintenance to equipment such as checking fuel, oil, and other lubricant levels and sharpening blades; observes indicators to check for proper function of machinery and stops operation when indicated; reports mechanical problems for repair.
  2. Maintains logs for mileage, fuel consumption, materials transported in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  3. Performs a variety of manual tasks including but not limited to; loading, unloading truck by hand or mechanical loader; securing cargo for transit; removing trees, roots, stumps; cutting grass, weeds, and brush using hand tools and small equipment; patches/repairs asphalt, concrete, and gravel roads.
  4. Drives or operates small dump trucks, motor patrol, tractors, side-arm/boom mowers, bush-hogs or related grass cutting equipment, to maintain parish property, servitude, and rights-of-way.
  5. Maintains equipment by washing and cleaning.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or general education diploma (GED) and 1 year experience and/or training.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, and divide in all units of measurement using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Louisiana Driver’s License (class “E”) and have an acceptable driving record.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Knowledge of the operating procedures and maintenance of equipment operated.
  2. General knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and regulations in equipment operation.
  3. Working knowledge of traffic laws and regulations related to equipment operated.
  4. Ability to perform or assist in minor maintenance and repair of equipment operated.
  5. Ability to perform physical labor required of the position.
  6. Ability to identify operating problems of equipment assigned.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, extreme heat/cold, near moving mechanical parts, and is regularly exposed to vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places.

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
