The Highway Maintenance Worker Technician performs skilled and semi-skilled work to maintain and improve County roads, bridges, and related infrastructure, with a primary focus on gravel road maintenance. This position operates a variety of heavy equipment, performs general road and bridge maintenance, assists with minor equipment repairs, installs and maintains traffic control devices, and supports snow and ice removal operations.
This is a hands-on position for someone who is comfortable working outdoors, operating heavy equipment, and contributing to the safe and reliable maintenance of the County's road system.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two years of related road maintenance, construction, heavy equipment, or similar experience.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the State of North Dakota, or the ability to obtain one within six months of employment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain the required DOT medical certification for operation of commercial motor vehicles.
- Knowledge of road construction and maintenance methods, materials, and equipment.
- Basic knowledge of bridge maintenance and construction practices.
- Knowledge of applicable workplace and equipment safety practices, including OSHA requirements.
- Ability to safely operate a variety of road construction and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to learn and become familiar with the County road system and jurisdictional boundaries.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and members of the public.
Summary
- Operates a variety of heavy equipment used in road and bridge maintenance, including motor graders, semi-tractor trailers, dump trucks, front-end loaders, bulldozers, scrapers, backhoes, rollers, mowers, asphalt equipment, and other related machinery.
- Performs gravel road maintenance, road repairs, snow and ice removal, mowing, asphalt patching, culvert work, and other seasonal maintenance activities.
- Performs preventive maintenance, inspections, and minor repairs to vehicles and equipment to help ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Performs general labor using hand and power tools for road, bridge, shop, building, and grounds maintenance.
- Installs and maintains traffic control signs and devices and assists with traffic control in work zones.
- Operates equipment and tools such as jackhammers, air compressors, mechanical tampers, power saws, and hydraulic drivers.
- Assists with the maintenance and repair of County vehicles, equipment, buildings, and grounds as needed.
- Accurately completes daily time records, material reports, equipment records, and work documentation.
- Works cooperatively as part of a road maintenance crew and responds to changing work assignments and conditions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
