Job summary

Santa Fe County seeks a skilled Equipment Operator to operate a variety of trucks and heavy machinery for road and facility construction, maintenance, and repair. You will also transport refuse, assist at the landfill, and manage related logs and traffic control.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, and within one year you must complete the County training program; in six months you must obtain NM CDL Class A or B. Daily outdoor work with safety protocols is emphasized.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of capability and safety practices for assigned equipment.
  • Ability to operate trucks, graders, loaders, backhoes, dozers, and other road machinery.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio and communicate clearly.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and maintain logs; comply with NMDOT regulations.
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Complete Santa Fe County Internal Equipment Training within one year of hire.
  • Possess or obtain NM CDL Class A or B within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a range of vehicles and heavy equipment including trucks, graders, bulldozers, scrapers, loaders, backhoes, rollers, and paving machines.
  • Contribute to construction, maintenance, and repair of county roads and facilities and assist with concrete work; perform flagging.
  • Transport refuse, manage landfill operations, and maintain scale house operations at the transfer site.
  • Schedule equipment maintenance, report malfunctions, keep logs, and direct traffic during road work.
  • Maintain facility cleanliness; respond to public inquiries and complete required training.

Job description

Operates light to heavy-duty equipment for transport of equipment or refuse for, construction, maintenance and repair of County roads or facilities, according to established policies, procedures, and safety protocols. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, trucks, mulcher, conveyor broom, mower, water truck, double drum roller, sheepsfoot roller, skid steer, and jetter trailer.

  • Operates equipment including, but not limited to, trucks, graders, bulldozers, scrapers, loaders, power shovels, compactors, rollers, paving machines, water trucks and snow removal equipment.
  • Operates light to medium duty equipment in various phases of construction, maintenance or repair of County roads and facilities; performs construction, maintenance and repair of County facilities, including concrete work, labor type operations and flagging; operates road grader; grades roadways leaving smooth surfaces; builds road shoulders, bar ditches and roadway crowns; operates landfill trenching equipment, compacting equipment and material loading equipment.
  • Transports refuse from transfer station to landfill; operates scraper to haul dirt to cover refuse; operates refuse compactor; operates grader to maintain roads in and surrounding landfill; operates dozer to dig and cover as needed.
  • Schedules maintenance on assigned equipment and reports malfunctions or failures immediately to supervisor; keeps logs and completes daily work reports; directs traffic during road work; weighs in commercial haulers and signs in residential permits at scale house; and maintains scale house for daily operation.
  • Ensures proper care and follows established safety protocols in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. Performs other duties as directed or assigned.
  • Assists in maintaining the cleanliness of facilities to include litter, snow and dirt removal; Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner and resolves questions and complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as directed or assigned.
  • Must complete all training as designated or assigned.
Knowledge/ Skills:
  • Knowledge of the capability and limitation of the assigned vehicle or machinery; and of the hazards, precautionary measures, and proper safety practices.
  • Ability to operatea variety of vehicles including auto side loader, rear and front-end loaders, backhoe, wheeled loader, and forklift and other solid waste vehicles.
  • Ability tooperatea two-way radio.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and tomaintain logs and prepare reports; and to comply with applicable NMDOT regulations.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must complete the Santa Fe County Internal Equipment Training program for this position within one (1) year of date of hire.
  • Must possess or obtain a New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (CDL) class A or B within six (6) months of date of hire.
Working Conditions:

Works outdoors in varied weather conditions with exposure to dust, fumes, airborne particles, allergens, and extreme heat or cold. Work involves high risk and potentially dangerous situations working near hazardous/moving materials, equipment and machinery; exposure to excessive noise; and working with hostile and/or offensive individuals. The use of protective clothing, equipment, devices and materials is required. Work requires the ability to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands or arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, hear, and smell; clarity of vision at short and long distance; and the ability to lift up to 100lbs. Work may be performed in rough terrain and may risk falls and bruises. Work schedule shall include evening, weekend and holiday hours. Position is subject to random drug screening, per NMDOT regulation.

Conditions of Employment:

Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening. Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Driver's License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties. Candidate must obtain and/or maintain all certifications required.
