Job summary

The Florida Department of Transportation Brooksville Operations is seeking an Equipment Operator to operate and maintain a range of heavy and medium equipment on highway and bridge projects. A valid Class B CDL with air brakes and at least one year of experience operating small/medium equipment are required.

You will perform preventive maintenance, assist with repairs, and support temporary traffic control and crew reporting.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, tractor trailer, drainage vacuum truck, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance; Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment.

Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.

Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.

Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.

• MAINTAIN AND REPAIR HIGHWAYS, BRIDGES AND/OR OTHER HIGHWAY STRUCTURES;
• COMMUNICATE BOTH VERBALLY AND IN WRITING, INCLUDING FOLLOWING ORAL/WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS;
• DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN EFFECTIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS;
• LIFT, CARRY, AND HANDLE UP TO 50 POUNDS;
• STOOP, CLIMB, SQUAT, PUSH, PULL, CRAWL OR BEND ON A FREQUENT BASIS;
• WORK OUTDOORS IN VARIOUS WEATHER CONDITIONS ON VARIOUS TERRAINS AND AT VARIOUS HEIGHTS OR IN HIGH VOLUME TRAFFIC;
• WORK INDEPENDENTLY;
• STAND FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME.

Other Job-Related Requirements:

• Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary. While on‑duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver’s license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety‑sensitive functions. A valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes is required at the time of hire. Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintains. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles. Possess a valid Class "B" CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes is required at time of hire.

This position requires a valid Class (B) CDL driver’s license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

• three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
• any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
• a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
• a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.

Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver’s license confirmed.
