Job description

This is skilled work in the safe and efficient operation of heavy and specialized equipment used to maintain assets associated with the Flood Control Project and Stormwater Management System. Occasionally, this position may direct a small number of laborers assigned to specific tasks. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of a supervisor. The ability to obtain and maintain a valid Kansas Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements is required.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:15 am - 3:45 pm

Bargaining Unit: Service Employee's International (SEIU)

  • Assist with maintenance and construction tasks involving heavy equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers, scrapers, and snowplows.
  • Assist with tasks involving specialized equipment like combination cleaners, pumps, and television inspection systems.
  • Clean, repair, and replace storm sewer conduits and structures.
  • Perform maintenance on mechanical equipment to ensure safety and proper operation.
  • Support supervisors in completing daily work assignments, including documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of equipment operation, including those listed above.
  • Ability to work independently and lead small teams.
  • Understanding of construction materials, methods, and tools, including brick repairs and concrete works.
  • Ability to operate a fire hydrant and pull hoses with resistance.
  • Ability to remove debris from manholes and work in confined spaces with proper PPE.
  • Capable of lifting up to 75 pounds alone and up to 150 pounds with assistance.
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions, tolerating environmental nuisances and noise with PPE.
  • Perform physical tasks such as pushing, pulling, climbing, bending, twisting, reaching, standing, and walking during an extended shift.
  • Respond to emergencies during and after hours, including in low light conditions.
  • Safely enter and exit machinery, including those with steep steps.
  • Follow directions and complete daily cleaning, construction, and maintenance tasks.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Obtain and maintain a Kansas Class A or B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within six months; Canadian or Mexican citizens must obtain a CDL from their home country if applicable.
  • Work outdoors in adverse weather, including snow and ice removal, emergency operations, overnight shifts, weekends, and low visibility conditions.
  • Ensure safety and avoid posing a threat to others in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain a Class B CDL with tanker and air brake endorsements within six months.
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Preferred Experience and Training
  • Experience with stormwater systems and infrastructure.
  • Possession of a Class A or B CDL with tanker and air brake endorsements.
