Job Description

General Responsibilities:

Terracon's Construction Services include environmental remediation, fuel service station closure, renewable energy construction (testing, installation, and maintenance). These services are executed by Terracon-employed equipment operators and support staff. Equipment Operators perform site reconnaissance to ensure utility clearance requirements are met. Work may involve operating excavators, backhoes, dozers, skid steers, graders, loaders, scrapers, compactors, earth-hauling equipment, and other mobile equipment. Competency will be demonstrated in each specific piece of equipment operated. Services are conducted in the field on Terracon or client project sites.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate competency in operating at least one type of mobile equipment such as excavators, dozers, motor graders, skid steers, backhoes, wheel loaders, compactors, or water trucks.
  • Prepare daily field reports for current projects.
  • Maintain equipment operational integrity by performing pre-shift and post-shift safety inspections, completing daily equipment reports, and addressing repairs promptly. Exercise stop work authority if equipment is unsafe.
  • Communicate regularly with project/site management about work status.
  • Verify underground utility locations with utility companies and conduct necessary inspections.
  • Participate in project meetings, including those with clients and subcontractors.
  • Identify hazards in the work environment and take corrective measures to eliminate them.
  • Follow safety rules, participate in pre-task planning, and report safety issues.
  • Maintain quality standards across all projects.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 year of laborer experience.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • OSHA trenching and excavation training or ability to obtain it after hire.
  • Knowledge of soil composition testing, trench safety, excavation safety, damage prevention, pipeline support during excavation, and backfill testing.
  • Completion of Terracon Mobile Equipment Operator Competency training after hire.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable violation history.
  • Ability to obtain certifications in specific equipment operation (e.g., excavator, bulldozer, front-end loader, backhoe).

Preferred Certifications:

  • For remediation construction projects: 40-hour HAZWOPER certification, TWIC, and DOT medical card are preferred.
