The City of Murfreesboro Water Department is seeking a skilled Equipment Operator to support construction, maintenance, and repair of potable water and wastewater systems. Job description

THIS JOB IS OPEN TO CITY OF MURFREESBORO WATER DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEES AND EXTERNAL CANDIDATES

This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.

The purpose of this position is the operation of equipment used for construction, maintenance of water, re-purified water distribution, storm water, and wastewater collection systems.

Essential Functions:

• Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.
• Operates backhoes, rubber-tired loaders, and/or other equipment used in construction, and/or 9 Cy vacuum/jet wash trucks in the cleaning, maintenance and/or repair of the potable water and re-purified water distribution, and storm water and wastewater collection systems.
• Conducts mechanical and/or hydro excavating in close proximity, above, underneath and beside existing utilities including high voltage electrical, high pressure gas lines, and infrastructure without causing damage to other utilities or structures.
• Conducts slope excavations and understands line standards required by OSHA for employee entry into trenches where line excavation is required.
• Interprets markings of utilities as color coded according to Tennessee One Call.
• Conducts equipment maintenance daily; greasing, belt adjustment, fluid levels, and system flushing.
• Operates various hand tools including jack hammers, pavement breakers, picks, shovels, various wrenches, air compressors, rodding machines, boring machines, and various type pumps.
• Maintains and repairs root saws and jet wash truck nozzles.
• Completes reports for line maintenance, manhole repair inspections, and water usage.
• Maintains a safe, clean, and orderly work area.
• Complies with all OSHA standards.
• Performs other work as assigned.

Physical Demands:

• Performswork that involves walking or standing virtually all the time and completes task that require color perception.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

• Requires a High School diploma or equivalent GED.
• Must have three (3) years of experience in the field of wastewater collection, sewage systems, and/or potable water distribution systems is preferred.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

• May require a valid Class B Commercial driver's license (CDL) and experience operating a Class B Commercial vehicle.
• Vacuum/Jet Wash truck operators must have tanker (N) endorsement.
