Job summary

The City of East Point is seeking a skilled sanitation equipment operator to maintain city roads and drainage systems. This role operates gasoline and diesel-powered equipment, inspects gear, and supports the Water & Sewer Department to keep streets clean and safe for residents.

Requirements include a High School diploma, five years of equipment operation, a Georgia CDL Class A license, and the ability to obtain Level 1A Soil & Erosion Certification within 12 months.

• Performs preventive checks and routine maintenance on vehicles and tools.
• Performs other duties as assigned and works under supervision in the Water & Sewer Department.

Job description

This position performs all sanitation equipment operation work in the maintenance of City roads and streets. This position reports directly to the Waterline & Sewer line Foreman. Supervise crew in foreman’s absence.

• Operates assigned equipment in the maintenance and repair of City roads, streets, drainage systems, including gasoline and diesel-powered automotive and heavy equipment, light to medium duty trucks, tractor trailers, excavators, packers, rollers and various machines, tools and power equipment; vactor vehicles & cctv;
• Cleans gutters, sidewalks, catch basins, drop inlets and facilities;
• Performs daily inspections on maintenance vehicles and equipment used on the job; documents and records missing equipment and/or needed repairs;
• Checks and maintains equipment, trucks, tractor trailers and power tools;
• Collects and disposes of debris, trash, etc., on job site;
• Performs other duties as assigned.

High School diploma or equivalent; five(5) years equipment operating experience; must possess and maintain valid Georgia CDL(Class A) license; must obtain level 1A Soil & Erosion Control Certification within 12 months; equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Skill in proper operation and basic repair of machinery and trucks used in assigned section;

• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;
• Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the general public.

Supervisory Controls:

Work is assigned by the Water & Sewerline Foreman.Work is performed under its supervision.

Guidelines:

Guidelines include City and departmental safety manuals, policies and procedures.

Complexity:

The work consists of manual labor and technical duties involving the proper use of a variety of equipment.

Scope and Effect:

This position is responsible for operating all heavy equipment throughout the City, which reflects a positive image of the Water & Sewer Department and the City, and it ensures a clean and safe environment for all customers and citizens.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, public utility workers and the general public.

Contacts are typically accessed to give and exchange information and provide services.

Physical Demands:

This work is typically performed outdoors with the employee sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, carrying pulling, balancing, kneeling or stooping and may require physical exertion over moderately long periods of time.The employee may lift light to moderately heavy objects and use equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.The employee must be able to maneuver in confined spaces.

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily in an outdoor environment where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals and possible sustained periods in hot, cold or inclement weather.The work may require use of protective devices such as gloves and safety jackets.
