The City of Ridgeland is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator responsible for operating a variety of heavy-duty automotive maintenance and construction equipment. Responsibilities include performing preventive maintenance, operating equipment for grading and excavation, and ensuring safety standards. Candidates should have one year of related experience and hold valid Mississippi vehicle operator's licenses.
SUMMARY: This is skilled work in the operation of heavy duty automotive maintenance and construction equipment.
Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation bulldozers, motor graders, backhoes, flushers, sweepers, chippers, and similar equipment. Operator is responsible for daily preventive maintenance of equipment operated. Operation is normally a full-time or predominate task although other work may be performed. Assignments are usually received in the form of specific orders to accomplish a specific task. Work is normally inspected in progress and upon completion. Supervision may be exercised over a small group of laborers. Work is reviewed by discussions and conferences; conformance to established policies and procedures; and accomplishment of desired results.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS MAY BE IDENTIFIED BY THE COMPANY AND LISTED AS SUCH IN THE INCUMBENT'S PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL ELEMENTS. VARIOUS TASKS MAY BE ASSIGNED UNDER EACH ESSENTIAL FUNCTION. THOSE THAT ARE LISTED UNDER THE EXAMPLES OF WORK ARE NOT ALL INCLUSIVE; THEY ARE EXAMPLES ONLY AND MAY BE AMENDED OR ADDED TO AS NEEDED BY THE CITY OF RIDGELAND.

EXAMPLES OF WORK
Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are not limited to, the following tasks. These tasks may be amended or other tasks may be assigned as necessary.
Operates a backhoe digging sewer ditches and holes for sewer repairs or construction; digs ditches, lays pipe for extension or taps of water mains; back fills and tamps ditches.
Operates a motor grader in grading and shaping streets, shoulders, and ditches.
Operates a street sweeper, street flusher, chipper machine, front end loader, or bulldozer.
Operates a front end loader in loading asphalt, gravel, sand, rock, slag, slurry and similar materials on trucks.
Operates a clamshell in digging footing and in lifting materials and objects.
Operates a low boy truck in hauling heavy equipment; operates a winch truck in removing stumps, logs, and similar debris.
Performs preventive maintenance on equipment operated to include higher echelon maintenance on street sweeper, flusher or chipper.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervisory duties are required.
INCUMBENT PERFORMS OTHER JOB-RELATED TASKS AS ASSIGNED AND REQUIRED; ANY DUTIES/TASKS INCLUDED IN THE EMPLOYEE'S PERFORMANCE EVALUATION ELEMENTS ARE ESSENTIAL TO THAT EMPLOYEE'S POSITION WITHIN THE JOB CLASSIFICATION.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Education:
Completion of tenth grade or vocational school
AND
Experience:
One (1) year experience in the operation of assigned equipment.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must have and maintain a renewable, valid Mississippi vehicle operator's license
Must have and maintain a renewable, valid Mississippi commercial vehicle operator's license
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
Knowledge of the operating characteristics of assigned equipment.
Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in the operation of assigned equipment.
Knowledge of how utilities are located underground and Mississippi One-Call procedures.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved in the work and proper safety precautions for the safe performance of the job.
Ability to complete necessary maintenance records on equipment operated.
Ability to make minor operating adjustments and to recognize operating deficiencies in assigned equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations as necessitated by work assignments.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability and physical strength to perform the work of this class under adverse conditions.
Ability to meet such medical and physical standards as may be prescribed.
Skill in the operation of assigned equipment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
These physical requirements are not exhaustive and additional job-related physical demands may be while performing the essential functions of this job.
Ability to be physically able, on a daily basis, to bend, walk, occasionally lift and carry up to 100 lbs. Operate vehicles, equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
