Job summary

CPKC is hiring full-time Equipment Operators to facilitate safe and efficient loading of domestic and international containers at its Intermodal and automotive facility. Roles include Gate Clerk, Ground Person, Hostler Operator, Auto Loader, and Lift Operator, assigned by seniority.

• Valid driver’s license.
• Minimum 1 year of experience with heavy equipment or as a shunt/long-haul driver.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

• Prepare railcars for loading with pedestals and spacers; assist with container securement on railcars.
• Assist with locking/unlocking container locks and updating system records after work.

Purpose of the Position

CPKC is hiring full‑time Equipment Operators to facilitate the safe and efficient loading of domestic and international containers at its Intermodal and automotive facility. Positions include Gate Clerk, Ground Person, Hostler Operator, Auto Loader, and Lift Operator, and are assigned based on seniority and availability.

Position Accountabilities

• Operate various terminal equipment including shunt trucks, light‑duty pickup trucks, fuel trucks, trailers, chassis, forklifts, and sweeper trucks.
• Move containers and chassis within the terminal to support train loading operations.
• Perform general duties as required, such as pre‑tripping of perishable intermodal containers, building electric reefer container sets on railcars, plugging in reefers on the ground, and monitoring performance.
• Perform visual inspections and report damage or defects of intermodal equipment.
• Prepare railcars for proper loading of different‑size containers by placing pedestals and spacers.
• Assist with securement of containers once loaded to the railcar, including walking on railcar platforms and locking/unlocking container locks.
• Update the system as required once work is completed.

Position Requirements

• High School graduation or General Equivalency.
• Valid driver’s license.
• At least one year of experience working with heavy equipment or as a shunt or long‑haul driver.
• Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
• Ability to follow advanced written instruction and/or training in skills such as driving.
• Strong safety mindset; this is a safety‑sensitive position in an environment of heavy equipment and constant traffic flow.
• Must be able to work various shifts, including overnights, holidays, weekends, and days off, as CPKC operates 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
