Job summary

The City of Coral Springs is seeking a skilled Public Works Crew Leader to operate heavy equipment and lead crews on diverse maintenance projects. You will perform repairs on City facilities, manage work orders, and ensure safety compliance on a day-to-day basis.

Qualified candidates have 3–4 years in Public Works, with two years operating heavy equipment and valid Florida CDL Class B. DOT Zone Intermediate certification is required, and you will communicate with residents as needed.

Qualifications

• Three to four years of Public Works/construction experience, including two years operating heavy equipment.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Florida Commercial Driver's License.
• Must possess and maintain Department of Transportation Zone Intermediate Certificate.

Responsibilities

• Operate complex and heavy mechanical equipment.
• Plan daily work orders, schedule projects, run a crew, and communicate with residents.
• Perform routine safety inspections of equipment and systems.
• Operate a wide variety of construction equipment and tools; handle standard hand-held tools.
• Perform routine to complex maintenance and repairs on structures, facilities, signs and other City property.
• Prepare and perform special projects (painting, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, paving, road signs).
• Identify and report deterioration and maintenance needs to supervisor.
• Act as Crew Leader in supervisor's absence and schedule tasks for crews.

Job description

Under direction, the purpose of the position is to perform skilled maintenance and construction work through the operation of heavy equipment and machinery. Employee possesses journeyman knowledge of various public services construction, repair and maintenance activities policies and procedures. Employee performs all work according to established safety standards, codes and regulations applicable to the work. Employee works with independence and limited supervision, and functions in a lead capacity in the absence of a supervisor.

• Operates complex and heavy mechanical equipment.
• Daily work order planning, completion of work orders, scheduling projects, running a crew, and speaking to residents in person or over the phone.
• Performs routine safety inspections of operating equipment and mechanical systems.
• Operates a wide variety of construction equipment and tools; operates various standard hand-held manual, electrical, and gas powered tools and equipment; operates a variety of specialized specific tools and equipment.
• Performs routine to complex maintenance and repairs on structures, facilities, equipment, street signs, sidewalks, bicycle paths and other City property.
• Performs inspections, maintenance repairs and construction of Public Works facilities.
• Prepares and performs various special projects, e.g., painting, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, underground utilities, paving, pavement marking, road signs.
• Identifies and reports any detected deterioration, repair needs, and maintenance needs to supervisor.
• Acts as Crew Leader to subordinate personnel in the absence of a supervisor.
• Schedules and plans tasks for crews and notifications of customers.

High School Diploma or GED. Three (3) to four (4) years of responsible experience in Public Works/construction, to include two (2) years experience in the operation of heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must posses and maintain a valid Class "B" Florida Commercial Drivers License. Must possess and maintain Department of Transportation Zone Intermediate Certificate.

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office or meeting and training rooms, e.g., use of safe work place practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire and building safety regulations, and traffic signals when driving.
